I was recently interviewed by Bold Journey Magazine, and one of the questions really got me thinking: how do I keep my creativity alive?

My answer keeps coming back to nature itself—getting outdoors as often as I can and taking at least one bigger trip a year to a national park or scenic spot, often revisiting places I've been before. Early on, my trips were about chasing "trophy shots." These days, it's more about the experience—the photos are just a bonus.

I also talked about something I've been doing lately: digging back into my archives and rediscovering old images with fresh eyes. Right now I'm working through photos I shot at Bryce Canyon over a decade ago—editing software has come so far that I can finally do justice to shots my old camera couldn't quite capture. That's actually what led to my new remastered Bryce Canyon gallery, live now at quietheart.com.

Rooted to Endure: I first spotted this tree some 30 years ago, clinging tenaciously to the red rock walls of Cathedral Rock on my initial trip to Sedona. It’s visible from the end of the hiking trail that climbs up to the saddle of Cathedral Rock, requiring a bit of effort and tenacity to see it in person. I hike this trail every trip I make to Sedona, and seeing it at the end of each scramble to the top is a welcome sight. This tree is like an old friend, and I always spend a few moments in silent communion with it before commencing the hike back down.

Before I post any image to my online galleries I create a test print to ensure the final print looks the way I want, tweaking the image file as necessary. For me, a photo isn't real until I'm holding it in my hands.
