During our Q&A yesterday with David McGuire a few folks asked about great whites and kelp. Well, as I said, I see them pass over large kelp beds quite often. As you can see in this clip, they seemingly come out of nowhere. This is why it is hard to witness this. They do hang near kelp but those moments when they pass over thick areas are pretty tough to witness. Nonetheless, they do love the kelp!

Last weekend, I witnessed a larger white shark circle a swimmer who had no idea it was there. I rarely get to speak to the people in the water after incidents like this but this time I was able to get the swimmer's reaction when I showed him the footage.

While incidents like this are common, it is a reminder that when we are in the water it is their home and we are the guests.

My channel has always been about showing sharks in their natural state. This scene is common all over the world every single day, and even though I see this happen often, I still get extremely nervous in these situations.

These are wild animals. The only thing that is predictable about them is that they can in fact be unpredictable. Still, footage like this is a great opportunity to learn about them.

Some sharks have scars you never forget. I rarely see sharks with big boat strike injuries return on a yearly basis. But this shark, which I named "Star", returned for the third year in a row. She's resilient and looking healthy.

I'm working on a video that kind of shows why they keep doing this. While anecdotal, it does demonstrate a pattern I keep seeing over and over when they glide over kelp beds. It's quite interesting. Stay tuned. In the meantime, let me know why you think they like doing this?

Yes...before the predictable "sharks live in the ocean" comments, I'd like to say. Just enjoy these beautiful fish coexisting with humans in their home off our shores. These posts are about an appreciation for sharks that are often misunderstood. It's not breaking news. But it is beautiful!

Yes, before you say, they can't "high 5", relax... it's just an expression!

But seriously, this young white shark spent over an hour touching the buoy with its pec fins and dorsal fin. It just kept doing it over and over.

I'm not a scientist so I'm not going to try to explain why. My best guess is that this young shark is still learning about the world around it. Regardless of reason, it's these little moments that make my day!
