FUN FACT — It’s not just police drones; you have no right to fire any kind of weapon at a drone at any time. Even if it’s over your own home, if you discharge a firearm at a drone, you can (and most likely, will) be arrested. This guy was lucky that it was just a BB gun, he just might have a chance at having charges lowered, but it’s still not likely.
Contrary to popular belief, you do not own the airspace above your home. Unless you have undeniable, absolute proof that the hypothetical drone in that scenario is breaking the law, or doing harm to you or your property, then nothing can be done about it. Unless it has repeatedly visited your home, then you *might* have a case for harassment of some kind. And even then, you still do not have the right to shoot it out of the sky.
Airspace is controlled by the FAA, and unless you’re near an airport, protected government building, or large stadium, the airspace is more than likely considered Class G; meaning uncontrolled, and open to be used. This is why it’s important to hire licensed and certified drone pilots as well. We have the paperwork and licensing to prove to law enforcement that we are who we say we are, and that we are following all laws and FAA guidelines!
