No live stream tonight. I’m in alternating states of unpacking, jet-laggedness, and getting settled in and don’t have the bandwidth or energy to do any photo editing tonight (plus my voice is basically shot from three hours of screaming at the top of my lungs on Sunday).

I only have two words to describe my time in Portland: WOW, but you’ll definitely be hearing more about the trip.

I’ve written before about my love of photographing waves head on. It’s one of my favorites for narrative purposes, but also- it yields some very unique shots!

I named this piece because it reminds me of the concept of a thing collapsing slowly, then all of a sudden. The wave is cresting along from the left, then BANG- it’s crashing.

Not sure why that idea would be on my mind in 2026…

‘Waves are Words’ is now open at The Gallery in Marquette and runs through May 31. Stop in and check it out, along with other great artwork by some incredibly gifted people!

As an abstract artist, sunrises on Lake Superior frequently yield bountiful harvests. There is something so beautiful about the colors of the sun and clouds reflecting off the surface of the water. Using different shutter speeds (like 1/5 of a second) adds a new dimension to the creative endeavor.

Fun fact- this photo was also published in the 2024 Winter issue of Humana Obscura!

Waves are Words as a concept is obviously rooted in the incredibly powerful wave displays often found with Lake Superior. The many voices, however, speaks to her multitudes. There are times when she is so calm and still that you can could almost mistake her for some fancy man-made pond.

Well, not really almost. Still, it’s quite impressive how quiet and introspective she can be.

Waves are Words and Waves are Wednesdays are interconnected. You probably figured that out, but this is my page so I’m still going to tell the story.

My artist non de plume at the start was Waves are Words, since I loved photographing waves. Back then, Facebook had this thing where you could send certain posts to Top Fans. As a way to try and drum up interest to the page, I started posting an extra wave photo each Wednesday (because alliteration) to my Top Fans.

Except I don’t think it worked; I’m not sure if the posts were visible at all, nobody engaged with the content, and I’m convinced those photos went to an empty part of the internet, never to be seen or heard from again.

Rather than scrap the entire enterprise, I just started posting a wave photo every Wednesday to my main feed. The purpose? To say ‘Thank you’ to everyone who supports and encourages what I do.

And so I want to say a hearty thank you, friends. ‘Waves are Words: The Many Voices of Lake Superior’ is homage to the big lake, but it wouldn’t be happening without the hundreds and thousands of likes, comments, and dollars spent on my artwork over the year. Thank you for believing in me! But also, I hope you stick around.

Because you ain’t seen nothing yet.

Sometimes, photos don’t need a story. They just an extra ‘O’ in the title to let you know they mean business. And the waves at the Black Rocks, located at the north-most point of Presque Isle Park, mean business! I highly recommend visiting there to see for yourself, but I even highlyer recommend exercising caution and care when doing so. Lake Superior does not suffer fools.
