June 6, 1928 - Sister of Daring Transatlantic Aviatrix Notified of Hop

Boston, Massachusetts - Photo shows Ralph Pametta, student in the Medford Junior High School, bringing the news from Mrs. Amy Otis Earhart to her daughter Muriel Curtis Earhart, teacher at the Medford Junior High, that their daughter and sister, respectively, Miss Amelia Earhart, had started on a transatlantic hop for England in the big monoplane Friendship. She was accompanied by Wilmer Stultz, once pilot for Mrs. Grayson, and Lou Gordon, mechanic.

Amelia Earhart, along with Louis Gordon and Wilmer Stultz, outside the Thorndyke Hotel at Newfoundland, in June 1928.

Photograph by Brown Brothers of New York City. The photo agency was established in 1904 and prided themselves for having about a dozen of the region’s top photographers capturing rural and urban life, celebrities, early technology, etc., mostly focused around New York City.

This is their original photo printed 96 years ago. When the photo was loaned out for use, they’d stamp it, then it would be returned to the company and kept in their archives, until it was loaned out again.

Margaritas in Atchison, Kansas with Woody Peard.

He had an insane wealth of knowledge about the ordinary and the obscure. We bonded over Earhart research, though conversations covered anything from racing mountain bikes to raising kids to the introduction of the three pointer in professional basketball.

He was born a few weeks before my mother, and he became a good friend. The distance between his city and mine is 2,556 miles according to Google Maps. Those familiar with Earhart’s last flight know its meaning.

He cared about the legacy Earhart created before her disappearance and was equally as passionate about researching her fate. His grandfather served in the Marine Corps and was stationed in Hawaii in 1937, during Earhart’s world flight.

He was one of the younger members of the original Amelia Earhart Society. And, like those steadfast researchers before him, he’s gone. He passed away in September last year.

We had a friendship beginning in 2018 but didn’t actually meet until the Amelia Earhart Festival in 2022. It was there he introduced me to his longtime, best friend, Ann Pellegreno. She, who replicated Earhart’s flight in 1967, treated us nicely at the festival, inviting my wife and me to a small tight-knit dinner with those presenting at the weekend’s symposium.

It’s a bit sad to not be in Atchison this weekend. It’s an amazing place with incredible history, even outside of Amelia Earhart. I am wonderfully lucky and fortunate to have met some great people there.

There’s an immediate and immeasurable connection between those who strongly share a common interest in Earhart’s life and legacy. Here’s hoping for some chilly margaritas with friends next year. In Atchison, of course 🙂

Amelia’s polka-dotted shirt! I only remember seeing photos of her wearing this during her stay in Miami at the beginning of the second world flight attempt. This would have been the last week of May, 1937. The duo of Earhart and Noonan departed Miami on June 1 and headed east.

I don’t know of any photos of her wearing the polka dots during the world flight. So, I’m thinking this portrait was taken in Miami. If anyone has any other photos or comments on this, please share!

Famous Folk at a Hollywood Party

Amelia Earhart, greatest of women fliers, was the guest recently of Emanuel Cohen, president of Major Pictures corporation, at an informal party celebrating the completion of “Outcast”, a new Warren William and Karen Morley picture. On Mr. Cohen’s left is Milli Monti, Italian songstress recently signed by Major to a long-term contract. Extreme left is Miss Madeleine Brown, a guest at the party. Miss Earhart’s husband, George Palmer Putnam, well-known literary figure, is Eastern editorial representative for Major, which produces Paramount Pictures.

“Outcast” was released on February 5, 1937.

January 4, 1929 - Amelia Earhart Opens The Westchester Aviation Country Club Cake

Here, you have Amelia Earhart's official opening of the Westchester Aviation Country Club's plane-shaped club house, or rather a pastry model of it, at an aviation luncheon recently attended by forty socially eminent Westchester women at the Apawamis Club, Rye, N.Y.

Looking on is Ruth Nichols. The Westchester Aviation Country Club is to be a sister organization of the Long Island Aviation Country Club, now building at Westbury for the promotion of flying as a sport among the socially congenial.

October 17, 1928 - Miss Amelia Earhart visits her sister Miss Muriel Earhart, teacher at Country Day School, Utica, NY. The pupils of the school are interested spectators at the meeting.
Despite this photograph not being in the best of shape, I’ve always felt it was still pretty neat and isn’t one that’s seen very often. The kids in the background, peering through the glass are getting a glimpse of someone who flew to international fame just a few months prior. And of course, their teacher, who would be their true and everyday inspiration and guide.

I think the kids see a superstar, and Muriel simply sees her sister.

The top left corner of the photograph is missing, and you can see the touch-ups done to Earhart’s white hat in order to help distinguish it from the lighter background, for newspaper printing purposes.

And in the spirit of this photo, absolute best wishes to all educators and students this year 🙂

February 19, 1929 - The Pioneer of Trans-Atlantic Flying For Women And The First Woman Glider

Detroit, MI - Miss Amelia Earhart at the start of her first motorless flight at the proving ground of Gliders, Inc., near Detroit.

- I don’t know much about the history of gliders. I’m familiar with some of the early names- Maxine Dunlap and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. However, the rest is totally beyond my scope.

That said, the headline of this press caption refers to Earhart as “first woman glider”. Which, I’m sure isn’t super accurate. I would think the list of early glider flyers extends far back into history. Does anyone know who is credited with being the first woman to fly a glider?

As far as this photograph goes- Earhart was contacted in December 1928 by media mogul, and the founder of Gliders, Inc., William Scripps. He extended an invitation to the freshly famous aviatrix, to visit his family’s estate, which included a mansion built in 1927 (still exists) and over 3,800 acres of land. And, of course, its own airstrip.

It was here, on the northern side of Detroit, at Lake Orion, where Earhart made her first glider flight.

The Detroit Public Library has a really nice photograph of Earhart in the glider. It’s similar to this photo, though probably in better condition. Check out their digital collection.

And happy birthday, Amelia!
