This is me. Watching over my daughter and her friend in the pool. I used to sit poolside, inundated with “Dad, watch this!” And hearing giggles. And avoiding their attempts to splash me. Now, they’re getting bigger. They don’t want their dad around so much. No matter. I’m still there. Watching over them from the bathroom window. Ready to jump in and help them if they want. Or stand back and let them learn a lesson.

I met with Jacky last week to talk about our shoot. We got to talking about family, her connection to her mom, and her family from Mexico. She never met her grandmother, but feels a strong connection with her. While we were talking, I felt like she embodied her grandmother through her clothing choices. She mentioned how kind and resilient her grandmother was. I could see that in Jacky. It gave me the idea to photograph her as if she belonged in that time alongside her grandmother. I thought of the portraits of Native American folks by Edward S. Curtis and Kurt Koegler. Shot with 4 x 5 and 8 x 10 film cameras producing sepia toned prints. So, I tried to channel their skill and experience into the photos I made with Jackie. I feel like I was pretty successful.

I can’t get this image out of my head. In a good way. For some reason, it makes me think of grade school. Where we’re all lined up against the gym wall. Hoping to be picked by the cool kid, or at least hoping to not be picked last. I feel a sense of trepidation as well as confidence in her expression. Yep. I’m happy with this photo.

I was primarily a stay at home dad for 10+ years. I didn’t always do the best job. Fighting… frustration… but I did the best I could. I am eternally grateful for all that time I got to spend with the kids. Sharing these goofy moments with my favorite girl in the world (this photo is about 10 years old), going on adventures with my favorite boy in the world (who doesn’t like to be photographed), and sharing lots of laughs with both of them.. good times!!!
