From the outside, it doesn't look like much.

But stepping inside this earthlodge felt like stepping into another time.

For centuries, Hidatsa families called homes like these their own. They gathered around the fire, shared meals, raised children, and lived through North Dakota's harsh winters beneath a roof made from wood, grass, and earth.

It's easy to admire history from behind a museum display, but walking through a home like this made it feel real. It reminded me that every landscape has stories waiting to be discovered, sometimes, all you have to do is walk through the front door.

I came to Theodore Roosevelt National Park with one goal: find the wild horses.

The map showed a few places where they were often seen, so I followed it with high hopes. Every stop rewarded me with incredible views and countless bison, but not the one thing I came for. After a while, I started thinking maybe today just wasn't my day.

Then, just as I was about to leave...

I noticed something tan in the distance.

As I got closer, an entire herd of wild horses appeared right in front of me. It was one of those moments that reminded me why I love exploring.

Sometimes the best memories don't happen where you expect them, they happen when you keep going a little farther.

The South Unit gave me so much more than wild horses. It gave me colorful badlands, endless wildlife, and a place that helped inspire

I almost walked this trail just to stretch my legs.

Instead, it became my favorite stop in Badlands National Park.
Every interpretive sign made me slow down a little longer. I learned that this rugged landscape was once covered by ancient rivers, swamps, and shallow seas. Giant animals roamed here, fossils formed beneath the ground, and over millions of years, water and erosion shaped the colorful hills we see today.

By the end of the trail, I realized I wasn't just admiring the scenery anymore.

I understood it.

And somehow, that made the views even more beautiful.

One of my favorite parts of traveling is leaving room to be surprised.

Before visiting Badlands National Park, I only knew where I was camping and which trails I wanted to hike. I purposely avoided learning too much because I wanted to experience it with fresh eyes.

Then I rounded a corner...

The hills were glowing with layers of red, orange, yellow, gray, and purple. I honestly had no idea this place was so colorful.

It reminded me that not every trip needs to be planned down to the smallest detail. Sometimes the best memories come from discovering something you never expected to see.

The first time I saw the wooden ladder at Notch Trail, I paused for a second. 😆

It looked a lot taller from the ground than it probably was. But once I started climbing, all the hesitation disappeared and it quickly became the most fun part of the hike.

Beyond the ladder, the trail winds through a canyon before opening up to incredible views of Badlands National Park. Every turn made me stop and look around a little longer.

I love hikes like this. Not because they're the hardest, but because they add a little adventure to the journey. Sometimes all it takes is one ladder, a winding trail, and a view you've never seen before to make a hike unforgettable.

Last night, I almost didn't stay here.

I pulled into this campsite just before dark, and suddenly every shadow felt a little darker. Every sound outside the van made my imagination work overtime. 😅

But then morning came.

I slid the van door open and was greeted by wildflowers, golden sunlight, and one of the most peaceful mornings I've had in a while.

It's funny how our minds work. Sometimes nothing changes except the daylight, yet it completely changes how we see the world.

Travel has taught me that some of the most beautiful places don't always make the best first impression. Sometimes all they need is a little light... and maybe a good night's sleep. 🌿☀️🚐

I thought I was just going for another hike.

After visiting two beautiful waterfalls earlier that day, I wasn't quite ready to head home. So I decided to check out one more trail, Devil's Bathtub.

The hike itself was already an adventure, with creek crossings, rocky paths, and crystal-clear water leading deeper into the canyon. Every turn made me wonder if the famous swimming hole was just around the corner

When I finally arrived, a family was getting ready to leave. Before they did, they showed me how easy and surprisingly fun the natural waterslide was. Then they looked at me with smiles that basically said, "Your turn."

The only problem?

I didn't bring extra clothes. I didn't bring a towel. And I definitely wasn't planning to get soaked.

But some opportunities only come once.
So... I went for it.

The cold water took my breath away for a second, but I couldn't stop laughing. It was so much fun that I climbed back up and did it again.

That day reminded me that some of the best travel memories aren't planned. They happen when you say yes to something unexpected.

One waterfall just wasn't enough, so I made another stop in Spearfish Canyon. This time at Roughlock Falls. 💦

The trail itself was just as memorable as the destination. A peaceful boardwalk guided me through the canyon, surrounded by fresh spring greenery and the soothing sound of the creek. Butterflies seemed to be everywhere, fluttering from flower to flower, making it feel like the canyon was waking up after winter.

Along the way, I stopped to watch a pair of ducks quietly searching for food in the crystal-clear water. It was one of those simple moments that reminded me why I love slowing down on the trail instead of rushing to the finish.

The first cascades were already beautiful, but continuing a little farther revealed Roughlock Falls in all its glory. Watching the water tumble over the rocky ledges with the sound echoing through the canyon was the perfect reward at the end of such an easy, scenic walk.

Sometimes, the most unforgettable hikes aren't the longest or the hardest, they're the ones that make you slow down and notice everything along the way. 🌿

Sometimes the shortest hikes leave the biggest impression. 🌿💦

Little Spearfish Falls is less than a mile round trip, but every step feels peaceful. The fresh spring greenery, crystal-clear creek, and the sound of the 47-foot waterfall made it feel like I had wandered into a hidden corner of Spearfish Canyon.

It's one of those places that reminds me you don't always have to hike far to find something beautiful. Sometimes, slowing down is the adventure.
