A complaint was filed with law enforcement after House District 121 Democratic nominee Shannon DeLoach alleged that Rep. Michael Rivers pointed a handgun at DeLoach's uncle, Oliver Francis, during an Election Day encounter outside the Green Pond polling location in Colleton County.

As I worked to verify the facts Tuesday evening, I spoke with some of the individuals involved, local law enforcement and state officials. The incident remains under investigation.

As part of The Island News’ coverage of the June 9 primary election, I asked Beaufort County sheriff candidates Doug Seifert and JoJo Woodward how they would address concerns raised by the Hollis family’s experience after their daughter, Emily, was initially classified as a runaway.

The candidates discussed missing persons investigations, communication with families, search resources and potential policy changes within the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
