Posted • There’s only one week left to visit my installation ‘Ámate’ at ’s Survey Space, curated by Rina Gitlin].

If you can, come on over today, Saturday; the gallery is open until 5 pm.

Next week you could visit Tuesday to Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm.

Next Saturday, November 5th, will be the closing event, and curator Rina Gitlin] and I will be in a conversation, moderated by Dainy Tapia of .seen.365, at 3 pm, about the process of bringing ‘Ámate’ to life!

We’ll also be presenting a short video about our trip to the town of San Pablito, Puebla in México, to meet the artisans dedicated to preserve amate paper traditions from ancestral times!

I hope you can make it to enjoy a moment of tranquility and reflection in this space, and also join us for the closing conversation.

Artist statement:

MENTAL STATES, EXPERIENCES, LIFE SITUATIONS AND IMPORTANT DECISIONS THAT WE HAVE TO MAKE MANIFEST AS STRESS, WHICH IS THE BODY’S PROTECTIVE REACTION TO EXTERNAL STIMULI. OFTEN THIS HAPPENS AS A RESULT OF INTERACTION WITH SOCIETY. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A HOSTILE SOCIETY INTERVENES IN LIFE? IN THE CASE OF OUR TERRORIST NEIGHBOR, RUINED LIVES AND CITIES. DEATH EVERY DAY. THERE IS A TOTAL CHANGE IN THE COURSE OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM. THE PARASYMPATHETIC SYSTEM BEGINS TO PREVAIL – THIS IS WHEN THE STRESS IN THE BODY GOES OVERBOARD AND THE BRAIN BALANCE IS LOST. THIS IS A NERVOUS SYSTEM THAT TURNS OFF ALL EMOTIONS AND MAKES A PERSON APPEAR TO FREEZE. IN THIS WAY, THE NORMAL PAST AND PRESENT PEACEFUL LIFE IS “FROZEN” FOR US.

THE SERIES OF WORKS FOR “WHEN YOU DON’T EXPECT” CAPTURES LIFE EXPERIENCES, DIFFICULT DECISIONS AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF CHOICES. WHATEVER THESE SITUATIONS MIGHT BE, THEY WOULD BE A SAFER PROSPECT THAN THE REALITY WE FIND OURSELVES IN NOW. THE ENEMY IS HIDING. THE ENEMY IS ACTING. AND WHILE HE IS IN OUR HOMES, WE HAVE NO CHANCE FOR A PEACEFUL FUTURE. IS PEACE ALWAYS A BETTER PROSPECT?

The narrative structure of Elizabeth Tremante’s paintings is simple: people in museums and galleries looking at art. The art has been curated to accidentally reveal a poignant or darkly comic psychological undercurrent that is sensed and felt before it is understood. The museum-goers in the paintings exclusively include women, parents, caregivers, and children experiencing varying levels of dissociation, panic, and stress. [...] In these works, female subjects that were sexualized in the original are newly recreated with even more brazen and exaggerated objectification. These paintings use awkward comedy to takedown ideas about propriety, respect, and elitism; they invite people to examine their own culpability or teach us to interrogate unchallenged or received knowledge about culture, gender, and motherhood.

Artist Statement

Michael R Lopez (b.1994) seeks to construct a fictional universe influenced from human behavior, supernatural elements and mystery with Rorschach-like sensibilities. He develops fictional stories in which he draws from to create otherworldly shapes, forms, symbols and compositions into unfamiliar visual languages. The imagery he makes brings a sense of melancholy and solitude while also invoking one's own imagination to move and play beyond the bounds of reality. He is interested in why we hate, annihilate our environments and how we easily get brainwashed by others. He metaphorically seeks to expose the dark and psychological trauma people have within. He amalgamates it all together to construct new worlds of his own. He blurs the lines between figuration and abstraction. He aims to portray moods of atmosphere, suspense, dread, edginess, strangeness and otherness to showcase a war between good and evil. Michael uses the medium of charcoal on canvas to develop high contrast, bold, black and white, negative and positive drawings.
