She saw him first.
And her whole body went cold.
Not from the weather.
From the one thing she had been afraid of for five years — being found.
Sarah had imagined this moment a thousand times.
In shelters.
In emergency rooms.
On park benches at 3 AM with two sleeping boys in her arms.
She always told herself it would never happen.
That the world was too big.
That he was too far away.
That he had moved on so completely that she had become invisible.
But there he was.
Stepping out of a car that cost more than every meal she had skipped combined.
Walking toward the building with his name on it.
And she was sitting on the sidewalk right outside.
Her first instinct wasn't relief.
It was to hide.
She shoved the boys behind her.
Covered them with her arms.
Looked down at the concrete and prayed he wouldn't recognize her.
But he said her name.
And her whole body shattered.
She couldn't hide the boys fast enough.
Because one of them had already seen the man's face.
