I knew when I found out I was pregnant that my view of the world would change if/when I brought new life into it. My art would change, my relationships would change, I would change. As I awaited this change, my days were filled with anticipatory grief as I expected it to hinder my creative eye and narrow my way of thinking. I would lay awake at night wondering how becoming a parent would negatively affect my photography, how I could prevent that, and questioning how I could stay relevant with the new title of “mom”. While I’m still trying to figure out how to keep my work relevant as I doom scroll while breastfeeding, I never expected the birth of my son to broaden my creativity…I see what matters most in a different way, a better way. I give less of a sh*t in the best ways. My approach is more centered. The creative process feels more whimsical.

To the creative mother or parent-to-be, don’t waste your time with the anticipatory grief. Your work will evolve for the better. It will just take time to realize it.
