My self-worth used to be a scoreboard, and other people decided the score. If they approved of me, I felt good enough. If they didn’t, I didn’t. So I worked harder, not towards something I was proud of, but to be seen as good enough, and watching other people “win” on social media didn’t help.

I’m 34 now, and I’m finally starting to see it differently. Life isn’t a win or a loss. There’s a lot of middle ground, where the little successes and the losses teach you things. Going through the struggle and process with other people, not just on my own, has been a big part of what makes the outcome so fulfilling.

That’s what self-worth means to me: believing that working hard through the process is what makes it worth it, not who approves of it.

We all are figuring it out in this chaotic world, but you got this! 🤝

Working for yourself means nobody sets your schedule. It took me years to build a structure that kept me accountable and still flexible enough for productions, slow seasons, and long weekends.

5 habits that got me there: find your best hours, write the week out, give yourself a place to be accountable, learn something weekly, and break up the day with movement and something to look forward to.

What structures are working for you? Always looking forward ways to improve and grow. 👇

Hey I’m Colter 👋

I’ve been doing film production work for over 10 years now and have rarely put myself in front of the camera, so I thought it was time I started by introducing myself.

If you’re an old follower, this might be redundant info, but hello to all those new people following my work and journey. Thanks for joining the ride 🤝

No one will call you out when you skip the early start, delay the work, or choose comfort over progress. From the outside, everything still looks fine.

But you know.

You know when you’re avoiding the hard thing.
You know when you’ve stopped growing.
You know when the small promises to yourself start to slide.

That’s what integrity really is. Not the big moments people see, but doing what you said you’d do when no one is watching, clapping, or keeping you accountable.

That quiet disappointment doesn’t disappear. It compounds. So does discipline. So does self-respect.

Every time you keep your word to yourself, you build trust with the one person who sees everything.

Show up anyway. Keep your word. Protect your integrity.

That’s where real progress starts. 🤝

I’m 34, I’ve been a video producer for over 10 years, and I’m embarrassed to admit...
1. I chose to stay in Montana to do this work, and a lot of the time it feels like I’m building without a map. Some days I wonder if I’m doing it wrong.
2. I’ve spent years trying to prove myself to people who weren’t even watching. Imposter syndrome has stuck with me longer than I like to admit.
3. Some of my biggest work over the last five years is with nonprofits and education grants, and I can’t share any of it. Meanwhile, I scroll past other creators posting their wins, and I feel like I’m falling behind, even though the work is some of the best I’ve ever done.
4. For a long time, I felt like I had to earn my place. Even now, I sometimes struggle to believe in my work.
5. I’ve been going to therapy because the pressure I put on myself was starting to affect everything else in my life.
6. I’m proud of the hip hop community I’ve helped build, but part of me still thinks it’s too good to be true.
7. And honestly, part of me wonders if my voice deserves to be heard at all. But I figure if I needed to hear this when I was starting out, someone else does too.

I’m sharing this because sometimes the work that matters most is the work nobody sees. If you feel like you’re building without a map, you’re not alone. Follow along. We’re doing this 1% at a time. 🤝
