From International Vulture Awareness Day (Saturday), California condor 574 Nomad scoping out a carcass on the beach below in the first photo and then feeding on that sea lion carcass (along with a bunch of turkey vultures, illustrating the size difference between the species) in the second.

(this is the same event that I posted a iPhone through the scope video of on my story on Saturday).

A couple of photos of California condor 1315 Summen taken about 6 weeks ago as this two year old wild fledged juvenile was in search of some seafood buffet along the coast. On this occasion he found some "fresh" buffet down on the beach.

California condors 1208 Fennec (left) and 168 Beak Boy appear to be tag free as they perched in a tree last weekend (they both have tags on their right wings only).

The end goal of the California Condor Recovery Program is self sustaining tag free birds in the wild, but we're not there yet, with lead poisoning from spent am******on in the carcasses they're finding out in the wild being the main gating factor in getting to that end goal.

It's always nice to a glimpse of what the future will look like though.

3 year old California condor 1208 Fennec shows off his current skin care regimen after having his head neck deep inside a deer carcass yesterday. Note also that at this age, his neck is starting to show the first signs of pink adult coloration.

This photo was taken a few miles south of the Timber fire and even here the air was smoky and hazy. A big thanks to all the firefighters and other responders working to minimize the damage this fire is causing.

Note also that I was not as close as this photo might suggest. It's a heavy crop of the original photo that was taken with a telephoto lens.

From the beginning of the month (and as seen on yesterday's VWS condor chat - check out the replay on the YouTube channel), 8 year old California condor 913 Marie Antoinette looking in my direction (checking out the bloke pointing the big lens in her direction maybe??) up at the VWS condor sanctuary.

Please note that I was not as close as this photo might suggest. The photo is a heavy crop of the original photo which was taken with a telephoto lens.

I was lucky enough to accompany the field biologists on a "handling" day, where trapped birds were given health checks and new tags before being released back into the wild. This activity often attracts other wild birds that come in to see what's going on and that's when I was able to take this photo.

Big Sur had a 2 for 1 seafood buffet deal going on over the weekend. 2 different buffets near Highway 1, 13 miles apart. California condors were taking advantage of both of them.

The first photo shows 16 year old condor 550 on Saturday morning as she was checking out the more northerly buffet on the beach below, with the second photo showing her and her partner, 14 year old 652 Ferdinand, as they took a second angle to weigh up the pros and cons of visiting this particular buffet (condors are cautious diners).

In the end they both left without dining, but 550 returned later in the day to partake in some buffet at this location.

The third photo shows 168 Beak Boy, at 29 years old the oldest member of the central CA flock, leaving the scene of the more southerly buffet, with both a belly and crop full of sea lion tartare (my recent story was an iphone through the scope video of him dining on said sea lion).

At the beginning of the month I was lucky enough to accompany the crew up to the VWS sanctuary on a handling day. I managed to tie my record for most California condors seen in a day at 58! - a welcome reminder of the flock's vitality after the recent high profile deaths.

The marine layer was nestling just below the sanctuary for most of the day but rose up to our level a few times, and within the marine layer is breeze, so whenever it rose up, the birds took flight.

Here are a few "group" shots from what was a magical day.

- 1137 Blue, with 994 Xakkin and 1095 Jabba higher up in the misty marine layer
- 9 condors including 1078, 745 and 914 Pasquale
- 943, 209 Shadow and 718 Apollo

btw - I still haven't finished editing photos from this day.

With the recent passing of coastal favorite California condor 646 Kodama, it was a nice reminder of her ongoing legacy when I got to see all three of her offspring last week up at the VWS condor sanctuary. Even better for a photographer like myself, two of them, the youngest, 1204 Jade (already 3 years old!) and eldest, 1003 Katie's Bird (now 7) were standing close enough together to fit into a single frame.
