Three weeks ago, I walked into my very first dance studio photo day.
A former surgeon with cameras, a million ideas, and absolutely no idea how much I was about to fall in love with dance.
To Debbie's Dance Studio ~ DDS: thank you for taking a chance on me.
To the competition dancers, the recital dancers, the first-time ballerinas, the girls missing more teeth than they had left, the dancers carrying costume #17 of the day with a smile, and every young lady in between—you were extraordinary.
I was constantly in awe.
To the older dancers who volunteered their time to help the younger girls (and me), thank you. You guided nervous dancers, fixed costumes, answered questions, and made every little girl feel like the star of the show. Every dancer deserves to feel that way on recital photo day.
To my behind-the-scenes crew—the hair fluffers, dress straighteners, hype squad, chaos controllers, and unofficial quality assurance department—thank you for showing up every single time. We are definitely getting our own choreography down.
And to the dance moms: I see you.
I see the costume changes, the rehearsals, the driving, the bun-making, the garment bags (I need to get one of those for sure!), the snack bags, the emergency sewing kits, and yes... the professional makeup appointments. Genius move.
Most of all, thank you for trusting me with your daughters.
Photography is art, and art is personal. Every photographer brings a different eye, a different style, and a different vision. I have tremendous respect for the photographers who came before me, especially those who have mentored and encouraged me along the way. My hope is not to recreate someone else's work, but to create something uniquely my own while celebrating these incredible dancers.
What I hope every dancer felt when they stepped in front of my camera was celebrated.
Not perfect.
Celebrated.
Because that's what I saw.
I saw confidence.
I saw courage.
I saw joy.
I saw young women doing incredible things.
And if these past few weeks were any indication, I think we're just getting started.
As for next year...
I already have ideas.
Sequins are forever. ✨
Love,
Anna
