I step outside, it only takes a moment for me to become totally present to my surroundings…a holy grounding into the here & now.
I’m raptured away by the songs of the winged ones.
Scrub Jay’s & Stelller Jay’s,
Evening Grosbeak’s & Robin’s,
Goldfinches & House Finches,
Nuthatches & Red Wings,
Golden Crowned & White Crowned Sparrow’s …
All in wondrous consonance with one another.
To be enveloped by their notes, by their presence …to look about me and to witness the community of Beings I get to share existence with!
How utterly extraordinary …how can I not be in gratitude of it all.

An unexpected feature in the Spring edition of The Gorge Magazine fills my heart with gratitude!💗

Photographer Calley Lovett was hiking through a meadow near Mosier in early spring when she captured this ethereal image of grass widows in the morning light. “There were dew drops everywhere,” she said. “It was heavy on the grass and the flowers, creating these orb-looking things.” Photographs can “take you to another place,” she added. “It’s like, is this even real? Yes, it is, and it’s right in our backyard.” Lovett often writes a poetic caption to go with her images - an attempt, she says, to “connect with people’s hearts.” For this one, she wrote: The Living World is full of wonder & mystery...there is nothing of the mundane here... when my heart reaches out to befriend Life something shifts...it is like Life takes a great exhale welcoming me in as if I am family who has journeyed long & far away, finally returning home.

the photographer
CALLEY LOVETT began taking photographs years ago but got serious about it in 2018. “I bought my first fancy camera and became pretty addicted to it,” she said. These days, she works at Moon Mountain Highway in Bingen, a shop and studio featuring works of makers, artists and craftspeople, and is also a personal trainer. But whenever she has spare time, she likes to get outside with her camera. “It’s kind of meditative” she said. “It’s an excuse
to get me out with nature to connect, and it’s also hoping I can capture something beautiful that could possibly invoke wonder and awe in people who see it. With her photographs and her writing, Lovett hopes to inspire people to feel gratitude and love for nature. “That makes people more prone to protect it,” she said. “Here’s our beautiful environment. It needs protection. It needs people to care.” on Instagram.

To know the day is waking and I must too when I hear the chatter of the Hummingbirds at the feeder.
To step outside and witness the beauty of the Oaks, Cedars and Pines I share the Land with.
To feed the deer and the birds, the squirrels and voles...even the little mice who take refuge in my basement...
This gladdens my heart and a sense of peace washes over me.
To sit with the resident Cottontail Rabbit, sharing space, looking deeply into each other’s eyes, to have my Scrub Jay friend waiting for me on my front porch anticipating the gift of peanuts, to hear the banter of the Ravens flying overhead... maybe they will swoop down and say hello, my silent wish as I hear their wings strum the air as fingers on a guitar and I remind myself as I gaze upon them of their utter intelligence and all at once I’m filled with wonder and possibility.

All I have to do is turn off the screen
Put down my phone
Let my mind and senses settle upon what is here physically surrounding me in this now moment.
Sometimes it is the green lush of a house plant
The hooting of a phantom Great Horned Owl
The smile of my lover.
Sometimes it is a Bald Eagle gliding above the river
The warmth of water bathing my body
Or the sight of Mount Hood as I cross the bridge from Washington to Oregon…I never tire of that sight, the grandeur, the immense beauty right in front of me.
How can I not be in awe of it all?
How can I not be in utter gratitude of the mysterious brilliance that encircles my life?

Can you remember what it feels like to be blanketed in silence?

Do you remember how to calm the chatter of your mind?

Can you transform your shallow breaths into deep belly loving breathing?

Do you remember the unique rhythm, the song, the sound of your own heart? Can you tune in, beat by beat, right here, right now?

Does the noise of the world ever get to be to much? Or have you acclimated to it, joined it, live it, day in, day out?

Do you remember how beautiful and nurturing silence can be?

While some are in celebratory mode
There are many who are experiencing the feelings of grief and fear.
The other than human living world thrives in diversity, NEEDS diversity to stay strong & resilient…I am so curious if us humans will ever fully embody that knowledge & wisdom? Hmm.

For those that are grieving;
I received this message moons ago from Owl for my animals as allies class I offered. It arose strongly into my consciousness this morning and I thought I would share :

“Owl Says: I see what others do not, my sight reaches far through the dark of night, peering into the void of the unknown I see the glimmers of light that live here, they whisper to me in the tongue of Great Mystery and we forge a sacred bond. I Owl, disciple of the shadow lands, Seer of the darkness, Child of Moon & Stars, I illumine the path that seems to have no light.”

May we take a cue from beautiful Owl and be that illumination it is time to harness and hone in on our own unique shine, there is no better time than this moment right here right now.

Change is in the air
A time when the shadows giddily play with the light
The trees prepare for their great surrender
And an extra blanket is placed upon the bed
The owl who speaks to the stars seems to speak louder this time of year yet the wings always stay silent
Can you sense the change, can you hear Autumn whispering her song as the birds dance and swirl to her tune?

To the heart cracked wide open it all matters.
The trees who give sanctuary to the many.
The spider who weaves a master piece in the corner of the window.
The snake outstretched in the road seeking to warm oneself.
The dandelion singing her love song to the bee.
The mouse who breaks into your cupboard at midnight to dine on crackers…yes to the heart cracked open that mouse matters too.
The Robin who celebrates the sunrise with sweet song.
The wasp who has no boundaries inviting oneself to the picnic.
The owl who flies silently, a ghost in the twilight.
The deer eating your prized blooms.
The neighbor who is always up in your business, yep them too.
The coyote howling up the moon.
The ground squirrel raiding the birdseed.
The wild horse declaring his freedom with every defiant swish of his tail.

The cracked open heart does not pick and choose who gets to matter;
The deep truth is, it all matters.

Consecutive days of intense heat have me thinking of all the Ospreys here in the gorge….their nests are so exposed to the elements…parents will shield their chicks using their bodies and wings to protect them from the sun but they have to hunt too, hydration comes from the fish they consume. It’s very taxing & my heart goes out to them.
