Robert Penn Warren, born in Guthrie, Kentucky, in 1905, became one of America’s most distinguished writers and remains the only person to win Pulitzer Prizes for both fiction and poetry.

In 1986, he became the first person officially designated Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress.

Warren’s roots remained important to his story. His first novel, Night Rider (1939), drew upon Kentucky’s turbulent to***co wars.

His honors included the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal for Literature.

Warren died in 1989 and was buried in Stratton, Vermont, but at his request, a cenotaph memorial was placed in his family plot at Highland Cemetery in Guthrie, Kentucky.

George T. Wood house. 200 Caldwell Street. Munfordville, Kentucky. The George T. Wood house was built in 1834, were it remained a private residence until 1980 and is now a law office.

***interesting side-note***
George Wood’s son, Thomas, was best friends of Simon Buckner throughout their childhood and teenage years.

Thomas would go to West Point and eventually become a Union General during the Civil War.

Simon Bolivar Buckner would become a Confederate General as well.

If the 1862 Battle of Green River, (near Munfordville) had events unfolded somewhat differently, Wood and Buckner might have confronted each other around the childhood home on opposite sides of the war.
