Marcus Moultrie pleaded guilty Monday 10/5/26 to murder and attempted murder in the case involving the death of 8-year-old Leland “Lee” Arnett and the attack on his mother, Deborah Snider in DeSoto Illinois on May 13, 2026

Moultrie entered an open guilty plea, and the court found it was made knowingly and voluntarily.

Three other children were living in the home, ages 11, 6 and 1. The 11-year-old sibling called 911, then ran to a neighbor’s house to get help. Authorities arrived to find both Snider and Leland beaten with a softball bat and seriously injured. They were airlifted to a St. Louis hospital. Leland died four days later. Snider, though she suffered serious injuries and spent weeks in critical care, survived the beating.

Moultrie, 37, of DeSoto, also after the fact tried to hire a fellow inmate to kill Deborah Snider for $1,500 because it would “help in his case,” court documents allege. It’s the latest shocking detail in a tragedy that rocked the little town of about 1,500 people about six miles north of Carbondale Illinois.

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 4 at 9 a.m.

On May 12, 1984, inside his home in rural Marion County Illinois L.D. Young, who suffered from a number of serious physical disabilities, including the amputation of both his legs below the knees, was found M*******

He had been beaten and had also sustained a gun**** to the head from a.22-caliber pistol and another s*** to the neck. A pathologist testified that the close-range shot to the head was fatal and that Young did not die from the s*** to the neck. Pieces of broken ashtrays were found near Young's body, and blood was detected in various places. A .38-caliber pistol, in a snapped holster, was found underneath his body, and the body had been moved after death. Young's truck, a .22-caliber pistol, and his wallet were missing, and his safe was open when police arrived at the scene.

Jeffrey D. Parmly was convicted by a Marion County jury for the murder and felony murder of L.D. Young. He was initially sentenced to death row.

After his death sentence was later commuted and reduced to a term of 76 years, state records show that Parmly served 37 years of his sentence at the Centralia Correctional Center, a medium-security state prison located in Centralia, Illinois.

After spending 37 years behind bars before being paroled in November 2021. for m***** while out on parole, he was arrested again by federal authorities and convicted in November 2023 for the attempted enticement of a minor.

On April 21, 1990, James Dean Hughey would die under suspicious circumstances

Police were called at 2:01am of an unknown medical emergency at 1512 Main Street once police arrived, they discovered there had been a disturbance in the parking lot at Billie's All-American Lounge in Mount Vernon Illinois and that James Hughey was badly injured
Hughey was rush to Good Samaritan Hospital where he would succumb to his injuries and passed away at 2:45am.

Donald E Fairchild 25 of Bonnie Illinois would be arrested that morning for the m***** of James Dean Hughey

In the coming months Donald Fairchild would be tried in Jefferson County Court
and found not guilty as they would say James Hughey passed away due to acute medical/natural circumstances rather than a criminal act or murder.
But the death certificate says Homicide sounds a bit SUSPICIOUS

On Sept. 7, 1986, Weldon Wade Lewis would take the life of his wife beloved mother Diane Elaine Lewis in Bluford Illinois.

Jefferson County Sheriffs confirm Weldon used a 22. Caliber Riffle to unalive his wife

Reports say the two had attended a party Saturday night in the northern part of the county
Diane would loss her life between 2 and 4am Sunday morning

Reports also have that Weldon would go to the Sheriff's offices around 4:30pm on Sunday and told the police his was in trouble he had harmed his wife
He was read his Mianda right and said nothing else

The reports would also say that Mrs. Lewis three young children ages 12, 11 and 9 was at the babysitters I can confirm that info is 100 percent incorrect.
Diane Lewis three children were actual in the home asleep and attended the gathering that Saturday night with their mother

That Sunday morning Weldon would awake the kids and get them ready to go which was strange to the kids as they never went anywhere without their mother and never with Weldon alone

Not sure if they ask to see or where their mother was but he told them she was still asleep and then took them to the hucks convenience store and then to the babysitter, but the babysitter was not awake yet or not home at the time, so he drove them to Rend Lake after that he would then take them to the babysitter's house
then this is when Weldon would turn his self in at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office
The Children would go on to live with their biological father

On Dec.31, 1986 Weldon Lewis would be charged in a bench trial in Jefferson County Illinois and received 25 years in prisons but Guilty mentally ill

Weldon Lewis would serve 12 and half years of those 25 years and was released and moved to North Carolina

On July 6, 1996, a group of kids finds a male baby deceased in a small creek on 12th and forest in Mount Vernon Illinois
The child would be named Forest Creek by the kids and a proper burial was set up and the child would be laid to rest at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens

I'm not sure if they ever found who the parents where or who drop the baby there if anyone has that info, please leave details in comments if you will thank you

On September 2012, 11-month-old Cassandra Paula-Irene Tiffin died in Anna, Illinois, in what investigators determined was a suspicious death. Cassandra was rushed to Union County Hospital on September 16, where she was pronounced dead at 10:07 p.m. The Southern Illinois Child Death Task Force was activated, and the investigation involved the Illinois State Police, Union County Sheriff’s Office and county coroner.

On October 4, 2012, Cassandra’s 39-year-old mother, Stacey R. Tiffin, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The criminal complaint alleged that Tiffin placed her hand over her daughter’s mouth and nose, causing the infant to suffocate. Her bond was initially set at $500,000. In February 2013, a judge allowed her to leave jail under strict home confinement and prohibited her from having contact with her surviving 3-year-old child or other children under age 15.
The case ultimately did not proceed as a traditional jury trial. In April 2015, Tiffin faced a bench trial, where the judge reviewed psychiatric evaluations and investigative evidence concerning her mental state at the time of Cassandra’s death. After considering the evidence, the judge found Tiffin not guilty by reason of insanity.

Because of the insanity verdict, Tiffin was not sentenced to a traditional prison term. Instead, she was committed to a state mental health facility for treatment and remained subject to court-ordered psychiatric care. The case drew significant attention in Anna because of the death of the infant and the unusual legal outcome several years after Cassandra’s death.
