Not many people walk into a headshot session super excited. I’ve even had a few people say that it’s right up there with going to the dentist. 😬

Geaneen included. She’s a lawyer and very used to being in control of a room, but not so used to being told where to put her hands for a camera. Which is fair. I don’t know what to do with my hands half the time either. 🤣

We ran through a couple of the “safe” corporate poses first, but that stock-photo feeling just wasn’t cutting it. Then I gave her a little direction: cross your arms (bad ass), put your weight on your back leg (a little sass), and smile like you've just won the case!

That’s the photo you’re looking at.

And honestly, that’s the biggest part of the job. Not the lighting, not the backdrop … figuring out what gets someone out of “posing” and into just being themselves in front of a camera. You show up and I guide you there. 📸🙌

Also, don’t you dare judge that crinkled seamless paper. It was a long day, okay, and photos were thigh up 🤣

There’s this idea that corporate portraits have to look like corporate portraits ... stiff, flat, everyone squinting under fluorescent light like they’re being booked for a crime they didn’t commit. That’s not how it has to be. Business portraits should be about conveying trust, reliability, and personality. That’s a whole character, so might as well photograph it like one!

I love playing with shadow instead of hiding from it. Let the suit disappear into the black. Let a watch and a ring do some of the talking. A little editorial edge can be a great way to stand out from the competition if it makes sense for you and your brand.

This one’s proof that golden hour isn’t always about the time of day, sometimes it’s about the edit. 🌅

Originally shot mid-morning under a large tree, with model ⚡️Britt Butler⚡️, during a test shoot here in Nashville back in 2024. I put my thing down, flipped it, and reworked it with a completely different color grade to bring out that warm, soft glow. Fun to revisit an old image with fresh eyes and turn a straightforward mid-morning shot into something that reads as golden hour. ✨

Test shoots like this are where I get to experiment without a client brief … just light, a subject, and taking an idea out of my head and making it a reality.

Word on the street is, not a lot of people talk about what happens before the photo shoot.

Everyone tends to focus on the photos. The lighting. The final edit.

But the shoot itself? That's actually the easiest part.

The real work happens before I even pick up my camera:

→ The consultation where we figure out not just what you do, but who you're trying to reach and what you need these images to make them feel.

→ The mood board that translates that conversation into a visual direction, so that we're not guessing on shoot day.

→ The location chat, the wardrobe conversation, the shot list ... all of it gets mapped out before you ever step in front of my lens.

By the time we start shooting, we already know exactly what we're making and why.

That's the difference between a shoot that produces a few good photos and one that produces images you actually use.

Preparation isn't glamorous. But it's everything! And honestly, it's one of my favorite parts of the shoot. It's kind of like creative math. Solving for 'x' where x just happens to be your wh'y'!
