Messin around with a new edit this morning. But it's not aimless wandering. I'm looking for ways to express my humanity into photography more. I think that's the big difference between how paintings and photos hit you. A photo is a capture of what one sees in the moment - with modern equipment intended to reproduce that moment with intense accuracy of what was actually there. Painting is what one sees or feels, but a rendition that is naturally married with the human who is expressing the scene. A heavy edit on a photo is more like the painter's hand. It's what makes us see Ansel Adam's work as specifically his expression of the scene. A heavy composition can accomplish the same thing. Sam Abell proves that. I believe that art should line up with the core beliefs of the artist or it should challenge those beliefs directly. I tend to see the world in right or wrong. And I'm the worst judge to myself. I get very depressed when I make the smallest mistake. I don't shrug and move on, I stay in the shame and guilt longer than I should. And when I think I've done something good, I enjoy the pride way too long. And I make sure others know that I have done something that is good. So a lot of times I am drawn to photos that are high contrast. Darker darks, brighter whites. However, in this edit, I'm trying to bring the lights and the darks closer together - I want to live in the middle ground today. I want to feel more of God's grace for my sins, and I want to forgive others for theirs. And I want to be less prideful about my bright moments. So here is a photo of a palm tree swaying in the wind, with a cloud faint in the distance. The brightest parts of the photo are tamed. The darkest parts of the photo are lifted. All the parts of the photo are brought closer to a central point - where it's harder to tell what was once dark and what was once light. Today, I will choose to not judge myself so harshly, and I will not assume that my good moments are so very great. Today is a day for the steady knowing that my best efforts and my worst moments are all too similar to God. And He loves me anyway.
