Dragonflies are such fascinating creatures! Our little winged friends are known for eating countless mosquitoes and flies in your yard, which makes them our friend...but there are some really fun things that make them magical. Did you know that most of them need light in order to fly and they will land even if the sun goes behind a cloud?? Some dragonflies can even change color to regulate their body temperature! The beautiful transparent, iridescent wings that remind me so much of stained glass are naturally antibacterial and scientists are studying them to create safer medical implants and food packaging.
There are some fascinating legends about dragonflies as well. In Europe, dragonflies were said to sew shut the mouths, eyes or ears of lying children while they slept, or of men if they used bad language, or scolding women.
But mostly, I think they are intriguing and beautiful in their own way. They are like little tiny streaks of summer magic-- little glass-winged rainbows bringing messages of warm summer weather to my yard. Dragonflies come in every shade the summer sky can dream up. Sapphire blues that skim the surface of the water, emerald greens that glow against the reeds and cattails, copper and amber wings that catch the sun like sparks from a campfire. Each kind seems to carry its own little enchantment. Some dart like tiny guardians of the swamp, others hover like wandering jewels and a few glide so softly they feel like whispers of warm weather itself. The never just fly....they dance, stitching light into the air with wings so clear they look like glass spun from sunlight. Every color, every pattern, every quick turn feels like a small piece of magic passing by.
