I could not have captured so many exciting images without the direct support of Kevin M. and our photo boat captain, Morgan C., both of Noroton Yacht Club. Thank’s also to Jordon, a US Sailing photographer, for sharing her experience and insights on sailboat photography, and to my Dad for sharing his years of experience as a racing/cruising sailor, U.S.G.C. Master, professional photographer and photography educator.

Organized Mayhem at the mark!

It may look like confusion, but nearly every skipper and crew member knows their role: round the mark, avoid contact with the mark or other boats, adjust the sails, and race to win.

First, it was yoga with goats, then puppies—and now, yoga with a Sonar sailboat. Hull 5 made the most of the pre-start, showing off an impressive balancing act on the deck and mast as it sailed past the committee boat, which starts the race.

Highlighting hull 6 was an easy choice; she stands out beautifully from the fleet. With her chute up, she is stacked to starboard of two competitors, running downwind under flying spinnakers. Behind her, an umpire boat stands ready to enforce the rules.

Off they sail. Here’s a short video from the start of Race 4 on Sunday, August 9, 2026. I’ve been told that protest hearings once took place after racing, once sailors were back on land, and those after-action decisions often changed a race’s outcome. Today, on-the-water umpires are everywhere, watching for infractions, raising red flags, blowing whistles, and calling fouls. Penalties must now be taken on the water, almost immediately.

Mark rounding’s are always exciting, with two sailboats edging as close to the mark as possible without touching it or each other. Shortly after rounding, the chutes fly, and boats 8 and 14 (hull numbers, not sail numbers) battled to hold their lead over the rest of the Sonar fleet.

What an experience!

Thank you to the Noroton Yacht Club and its staff for the opportunity to serve as an on-the-water photographer. The event was the 2026 Chubb U.S. Sailing Youth Triplehanded Championship for the Sears Cup, where 16 teams sailed Bruce Kirby’s 23-foot Sonar one-design keelboats over seven hours and six races.

Stay tuned—I’ll be sharing more images, and possibly a video or two, later this week.

Photo Caption: Here in one of the late afternoon races, chutes up, the fleet has spit into multiple groups as they reached the windward mark.
