What was once Sarasota Square Mall is being reimagined as a nearly 100-acre mixed-use destination featuring:

✅ 530,000 square feet of retail, restaurant, and commercial space
✅ Est.1,200 planned residences
✅ Over an acre of outdoor gathering space
✅ Whole Foods, HomeSense, CAVA, Chipotle, Joe & The Juice, Charles Schwab, and Warby Parker already announced for Phase One

Phase One is expected to open in Q1 2027, with additional phases planned through 2028 and beyond.

If completed as envisioned, this project has the potential to become a vibrant destination where people can shop, dine, live, work, and gather, reshaping the future of South Sarasota.

And it just keeps coming. 🌴
CNN just ranked Sarasota No. 1 on its list of Best Towns to Visit in 2026, highlighting our beaches, arts and culture, natural beauty, circus history, and overall appeal as reasons to visit.
But CNN is hardly the only one noticing.

Over the last two years, Sarasota and the surrounding area have continued to show up on national and international “best of” lists:
• Siesta Beach was named the No. 1 beach in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report.
• Siesta Beach landed on Lonely Planet’s list of the 22 Best Beaches in the U.S.
• Siesta Key ranked among the World’s 50 Best Beaches.
• Siesta Beach was recognized by Tripadvisor as the No. 1 beach in the U.S. and No. 4 beach in the world.
• Siesta Key was named one of the best beach towns in the South by Southern Living.
• Sarasota ranked among the best cities in the South by Southern Living.
• PODS ranked Sarasota among the top 10 cities with the highest number of move-ins.
• Lakewood Ranch and Wellen Park ranked among the top master-planned communities in the country.
• St. Armands Circle, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, SRQ Airport, Forks & Corks, 99 Bottles, The Old Salty Dog, and even Der Dutchman have all received national recognition too.

That is a lot of attention in a short period of time.
It’s great to see Sarasota recognized for what so many of us already know. But it also raises the bigger question: how do we manage all this attention and growth while preserving the character, quality of life, and natural beauty that made people fall in love with this area in the first place?

Wellen Park in Venice/North Port south of Sarasota was ranked the top 6 master-planned community in the US in 2025. There’s a reason so many people are now talking about Wellen Park. Walkable downtown. New energy. Live music. Restaurants. Trails.
And beaches like Venice, Manasota Key, and Englewood just a short drive away. Benderson Development in the Wellen Park area aquired 52 acres for commercial redevelopment. That will bring restaurants, stores and way more to do. I believe the redevelopment will likely be a net positive for Wellen Park. A must get to know if you are looking for new construction opportunities close to Sarasota.
