Paul Saphier so loved to jump into the car and head to the rolling hills of Rossie where he would lose track of time painting or drawing away.
It would have been a rocky promontory much like the one seen here that inspired his lyrical, poetic painting Altitude Ascent (seen here and below). The painting is a beautiful visual metaphor in which a small fragile ice-covered tree reaches toward the light. The muted sun – much as it appears in our Northern winters — holds its own beside a single white birch.

Many of Paul Saphier’s artworks were inspired by his days working on the shores of the mighty St. Lawrence River. Some of those works have inspired works of poetry as well. The Iva Smith Gallery will be sharing Paul’s Saphier’s works along with poems they have inspired this summer, especially poems written by Laurinda Lind Petersen who will be one of our Gallery’s featured artists. Indeed, much could be written about this moving homage to our Northern night skies as seen from river’s edge. ‘Blind Bay Revealed’ (egg tempera on panel, 13 x 8”)
