This illustration is based on an article I read from the about penguins in the Falkland Islands who have been benefitting from the anti-personnel mines left behind by the United Kingdom during the short 1982 conflict.

The penguins themselves are not heavy enough to detonate the buried explosives however the predators that hunt the small flightless birds are heavy enough to trigger the high explosive charges. These defensive fortifications have enabled the penguin population to thrive.

Unfortunately a recent demining campaign is threatening the penguins 35 year long strategic advantage over their natural enemies.

Everyday after work I’ve been trying to teach myself how to draw (better). I took a class this past semester at school and the results were horrendous.

I suck at drawing straight lines, drawing quality shadows and highlights, and for the life of my I cannot seem to figure out perspective or how to draw hands and feet.

I’m really crappy with a pen and paper but I’ve been working on a workflow that allows me to combine my stronger skills in illustrator and photoshop with my weak drawing skills to create illustrations that are semi decent.

I was looking through my image archives for inspiration for a different project for one of my classes and I stumbled upon this photo exploration I did a while ago.

The structure is an oyster shack used for tending the oyster fields around it. The shack to the right detaches from the larger structure and has a motor attached to it to aid in the agricultural operations in the surrounding waters.
