Appropriate song for the canals this morning… we don’t see the rain so often, but it’s also beautiful when it does ☔️

Old Venice, back on the water. ⛵️🌴

Yesterday the Sherman Canal Boat Race made its return, a revival of the wonderfully DIY downwind regattas that took place on the Venice Canals in the ’60s and ’70s.

In honor of his birthday, Harlan brought the tradition back: two hours to build a “sailboat” from found materials, $30 limit, no existing watercraft allowed… and then, by sail only, off they went down Sherman Canal (or NOT) slight change of course as the wind took them down Grand Canal. 😂 And special thanks to Gerry Karr for always being down to host the coolest Venice things!! 💙

This is the Venice I love ❣️creative, slightly ridiculous, community-made and completely original.

And there’s a great historical full-circle moment: photographs from the original era of canal regattas are currently on exhibit at the Venice Heritage Museum If yesterday makes you curious about the Venice that came before us, go see them. ❤️

Here’s to keeping the weird, wonderful traditions of Venice alive.

VENICE THEN/NOW — The Duck Park 🦆

At Linnie Canal and Dell Avenue, the little park most of us know as “Duck Park” looked very different before the canals were restored.

Longtime canal resident Paul Tanck, who lived across the street, remembers it in the mid-1980s as a rustic little lot with a few swings and parking along Dell. Apparently it could get rowdy enough that neighbors occasionally called the police — only to be told there was no park at that location.

Today it’s officially Linnie Canal Park: a tiny green gathering place, playground, duck hangout and home to canal traditions like Canaloween and the Holiday Toy Drive.

Same little corner. Very different Venice.

Which do you prefer — the wonderfully scrappy old Duck Park or the one we have today?
