My photo career started with families. And then after some time couples and weddings quickly took over and it was full steam ahead and there was little time for them. I think I convinced myself, not that weddings were better, but that I didn’t miss the families, the babies, the OG stuff. But as I’ve taken the gas pedal off weddings and had more time for what I once did a lot of I realized I do love it. It feels very regular, in a very good way. Going into people’s homes, meeting their shy kid turned bestie, running around a park making a fool of myself for a laugh, going home with a new tattoo on my forehead and watching parents melt their expectations and shoulders a bit in the process. Kids have no boundaries. No filter. No risk of looking bad. They just are. And I love capturing it cause it’s kind of predictably unpredictable but the result is always good cause it’s honest. And I’m glad I didn’t keep lying to myself that I didn’t miss it.

To the bow of the boat. Where I go when I need to be not where I am. The blood draw, the pre bed overtired tantrum, the transition to a parent teacher conference after hearing a friend’s most unsettling news. It’s always where I’ve gone for that calm place. The image of an eight your old me at the bow of the sailboat, singing into the wind, in my Limited Too suit, pre Moana Madonna, free. Trusting whoever was at helm (my dad) and whatever the waves would bring under me. A sister next to me or solo. Feeling detached yet secure. At sea but safe. Kind of already understanding how small I was in the scheme of it all, yet not insignificant.

So to the bow I still go. When needed. Even subconsicously. When things get a bit mentally tight or the ER waiting room has smells you’d rather not be smelling. To the bow. The breezy bow.

I never did get to meet my grandfather, the patriarch sailor of the family, the reason why I knew what a bow was at eight years old. The town doctor who couldn’t help but help when stopped around town, even on days off, being asked questions and queries. Before there was the internet and we trusted a source with a heartbeat and degree only (what times!) So to the boat he went for respite and solitude and salt. And although I never overlapped with him on this side of time, this is why legacy, quiet legacy, is so cool and runs so deep. As it lives on.

Even in the littlest, liveliest boys who have his dna and name and thoughtfulness wrapped up in them, learning what a bow is and how to not fight the tide but balance and roll with it. Ups and downs. Rhythms and pulse. To the bow.

weddings are wildly inconvenient. i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again. the rolling the suitcase into the airport stall with the half broken wheel, the blisters on the feet, the finding the babysitters and then finding another one cause that one bailed, the waiting for the rental car return shuttle just to take it to the wrong one, the realizing you don’t have the right bra for the dress, the forgetting a tie, the google maps blipping out followed by the poor attempt to trust our non existent inner directional guide…

yet

having your village surround you, having your closest people witness your forever, having them show up on your dance floor surprising you with a choreographed dance because they know that is your love language. it surpasses the blisters and the bras and the schlep. there is no substitution for showing up. may people find the gusto to rally for their people forever and ever amen.
