Havana Now

Havana Now My name is Adria and I take small groups of iPhoneographers to Havana, Cuba. I am a travel photographer and my medium of choice is my iPhone.

I take small groups, 4-6 people to the streets of Havana. I like to move slowly, I enjoy working with people one on one and i love mastering the skill that is my iPhone. I have had all the gear and the weight finally got me. For my creative expression - less is more.

I felt a bit guilty take n this one, he wanted to sing for me and I truly just wanted to take the photo. So handsome, sincere, and a most lovely combination of all things Cuban and Havana. Life is beyond challenging these days and it’s nice to feel a bit more ease around the Malecón.

This is my neighbor and Naomi’s little sister. ( DANG I CANT REMEMBER HER NAME 🤦‍♀️) The park across the street is gone, but at least it’s not a trash heap. There’s 4 siblings, 2 boys and 2 girls. I think today I’ll see if I can get a photo of the whole family.

This statue is next to the Grande Theatre in the Parque Central. I can’t say I’ve ever really gotten a shot of it I liked until yesterday. There was a man roasting pork for Cubano sandwiches and the smoke was coming across just as a man walked through. Quickly went for the low angle to try to enhance the silhouette. It took 10 years, but I finally got one I liked. Yes, I can be patient. 🤪

If by any chance you have spent time photographing the kids in Centro Havana playing soccer, you’ll know that the shot was 100% luck. That’s just fine by me, I’ll take luck any day of the week. culture Speaking of Cuban Culture their kindness to each other is so sweet.

Summer sunsets and swims are the best in Havana, and for many that dip in the Ocean might be the only rinse of the day. I swam yesterday and it was good. Just barely cool enough to be refreshing but entirely did the job when it came to washing the day off. Enjoy the color therapy and the sound therapy :-)

In Cuba it doesn’t make much difference what color the skin is you will always see bright blue and green eyes. I love this hold - kinda better than the normal piggy back ride. It looks more relaxing and easier for snoozing.

It’s interesting walking through Old Havana during a blackout. You’re a bit invisible - until you’re not. And then if you’re me you definitely stand out. There certainly aren’t any tourists here and people are a little more skeptical. Initially they kind of stare and wonder what I want, the key is to be comfortable, smile, don’t be in a hurry and just ask if you can watch. It doesn’t take but a few minutes for the energy to shift and there’s no question I could have joined the game. Cubans sure are doing a great job making the best of a sh*tty, difficult, no fun situation.

For the last 2 nights Old Havana has had blackouts - it’s truly a strange feeling walking through a City in the dark. It makes a bici taxi such as this stand out almost like a beacon of hope. They’re generators and sometimes solar powered bulbs that define the path home. If I zig zag and can usually get some sort of light on each block. I don’t feel scared, it’s a bit eerie when it’s too quiet but for the most part people are outside. I think what I notice the most at night as the sense of desperation. It’s hot, maybe no water / shower and no one knows what going to happen. Make no mistake - my spidey senses are on and I get my b***y home.
