Havana Now

Havana Now My name is Adria and I take small groups of iPhoneographers to Havana, Cuba. I am a travel photographer and my medium of choice is my iPhone.

I take small groups, 4-6 people to the streets of Havana. I like to move slowly, I enjoy working with people one on one and i love mastering the skill that is my iPhone. I have had all the gear and the weight finally got me. For my creative expression - less is more.

The Rafael Trejo Boxing gym is always on the list in Havana. The crew is friendly and welcoming, and lucky for me - happy to be photographed. I’m always loving how many woman are there and it always feels like they are seen as equals. Did you know that woman could legally vote in Cuba before they could in the USA ?

That’s Naomi, she lives next door from where I stay in Havana Vieja. She’s 11 and generally feels about that age to me. Then I took this pick and looked at her nails and the serious nature that is life in Cuba. Not looking 11 now :-/ She lives with her 3 siblings across from this small playground. Kind of hard for me to call it a playground these days. The wall has been destroyed and the corner has become a trash heap. The trash gets picked up (probably thanks to the hotel.) but not before it makes its way into the playground. Cuba can really bring the goodness out in people, they need it. I had a friend give me a donation before I went down and with the help from .miamor the trash will be cleaned up and the wall will be repaired. As an American the visa, we travel under asks that we support the Cuban people. It’s not a very difficult thing to do.

It’s game day in NYC - first game of the finals, and hopes and dreams are running wild. Life long Knick fans are yet to see their team take home this title, and it is in reach.

Hopes and dreams are risky business. At some point I realized Cubans haven’t had much reason for either in several generations.

Today I am filled with hope and am reminded of how powerful it is to have dreams. Be brave, be strong, and dream big! History is changing in front of our very eyes.

Last month in Havana and I took the ferry to Casa Blanca - it’s just across the harbor and provides such a different view and feel than Havana. There were tons of kids swimming, a small beach and then this fisherman. He was definitely the highlight of my day. and joined us and both have great images. I love seeing how all four of us experienced the same surroundings. Pamela got great pictures on the beach and of the swimmers - I just couldn’t find a groove. I learn from seeing through her eyes and look forward to seeing Ana and Adrienne’s images.

This basketball / football court was around the corner from me on this last visit. One of my favorite things about hanging out where they play ball is that all generations co exist and play together. One this day not only did we have fluidity in age but also games. It was mostly basketball ball but also soccer and then also the graffiti artists were at work and playing ball. A great mashup in my book.

There’s an obvious place to start when it comes to telling a story about Cuba - you start with the people. You will never meet more kind, warm hearted, generous, resilient humans.

Loving the remnants of rain in Havana today. There are so many moments in this city that give you pause. It could be now, it could be before. It could be the beginning of the end or just more of the same. What we know is that know one knows. With a slightly different edit you truly would have no idea.

Feeling quite lucky to be waking up at .miamor these days. I’m in the heart of Old Havana and love this view from the rooftop patio. Havana is not for the weak of heart right now but if you have an adventurous spirit and like to skip the crowds Havana sure would love to see you. 🫶🇨🇺🙏
