It’s been a long, jaw-dropping week.

Eight years ago, there was a movement to band together and show force.

In 2017, I set out to make portraits of the diverse New Yorkers who embody the space of protest and document their collective experiences. From 2017 to 2018, I attended over 40 events. I made thousands of still photographs of protesters, onlookers, police, and press, focusing on their interplay and the spontaneous communities that transpired within the temporal space of demonstrations. My subjects were young and old, New Yorkers of all sizes and backgrounds captured on their home turf in poignant moments of expressed emotion and character—from anger, fear, pride, exhilaration, and mystery.

For the video (first screened at TEDxSydney, slides 1/2), I combed the thousands of photographs, selecting the most compelling portraits (~4500), and animated them as discreet vignettes in a time-lapse effect. The five channels work together like an orchestra of individual portraits merging into a collective experience. You can watch it on my website—the link is in my bio.

I’m trying to remember that magic happens when we come together in the same room, the same public sphere, to hear one another, to be in conversation. I am not leaving Instagram today. It’s essential to continue building conversations to break the echo chambers. Happy Monday.

September is Su***de Awareness Month.

Last year I started a print sale fundraiser in honor of my dear friend Christine. I have decided to continue this photographic print fundraiser annually through 2032 to support NAMI , the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of all those affected by mental illness.

This sale allows you to purchase an ongoing, experimental portfolio of my work, accumulating to 10 prints. Each year, a new print will be available for purchase. In addition, a limited number from the previous editions of this fundraiser will be available for sale.

The 2023 pricing is as follows:

S75 for one print or $140 for two prints
+ $30 to all sales for shipping and materials.

September is world su***de prevention month. Last year, I ran a print sale fundraiser to benefit in honor of my dear friend Christine.

Christine was brilliant, kind, and the most wonderful mother. A senior ER nurse at NYU, Christine and her team set up one of the first Covid testing sites in NYC. She was a mighty woman, proud of her work for the community. We met around five years ago through our daughters and became fast friends. It was that instant friendship where you felt you had known each other forever. She was the one I called to commiserate on everyday life.

She tried to tell me how bad it was. I'm thankful that I was one of a handful of people she eventually told, but I think by the time she realized how deep her depression was and that she needed help, it was too late. Her pain was too severe. When she let me in, I listened, but still, I didn't understand. I didn't (I couldn't) grasp the depths of it all. I honestly (naively) did not think I would lose her.

In the coming days, I will launch the 2nd year of this fundraiser. Below are the details of last years print pictured above. Stay tuned for more information on the new edition. 🌳 ☀️🌵

I’m looking forward to building upon my new body of work “In Wildness” in the studio and in the forest. This photograph is a work in progress made during my recent artist residency .
