Happy Canada Day! This is Bruce Kirby, originally from Ottawa, and an old friend and neighbor. He designed the Laser sailboat- on a napkin- way back in the day. Now it’s an Olympic class. He sailed in the Olympics himself, and designed many boats including Canada’s entries to the America’s Cup. Bruce was appointed to the Order of Canada last year. I always think of him at the helm, squinting in the sun, uttering something hilarious under his breath. I shot this maybe a dozen years ago right before we went out for a Wednesday night race on his boat, Exit 12. He wouldn’t stop muttering in front of my 4x5.
