What If Earth Becomes Uninhabitable? Where Would Humanity Go?

It's one of the biggest questions scientists and futurists keep coming back to: if Earth ever became unlivable, where would humanity actually go?

Mars is often the first name that comes up, thanks to its similar day length and confirmed reserves of water ice, though its thin atmosphere, freezing temperatures, and radiation exposure would make survival there incredibly difficult without serious technology. The Moon has been floated as a closer stepping stone, useful for testing survival systems before venturing farther out, but it lacks atmosphere entirely and would require fully sealed habitats. Some scientists and engineers have proposed massive rotating space stations, artificial worlds built from scratch rather than adapted from an existing planet, potentially offering more control over gravity, temperature, and resources than any natural body nearby.

Beyond our solar system, astronomers have identified thousands of exoplanets, some sitting in what's called the habitable zone, the distance from a star where liquid water could theoretically exist. The challenge is enormous distance. Even the closest known potentially habitable exoplanets are light-years away, meaning a journey there with current technology would take generations, not a single human lifetime.

Whichever direction humanity looked, the challenges would be the same: producing breathable air, growing food, securing clean water, generating power, and protecting people from radiation, all in an environment nothing like the one our bodies evolved for. It's part of why so many scientists emphasize that protecting Earth's habitability now is far more realistic than replacing it later.

German Rocket Company Reaches Orbit, a First for Commercial European Spaceflight

Isar Aerospace, a German company founded in 2018, successfully reached orbit and deployed satellites on Saturday, becoming the first commercial space company from continental Europe to deliver satellites into orbit. The company achieved the milestone on just its second-ever flight.

The mission, named Onward and Upward, launched the company's Spectrum rocket from its dedicated launch complex at Andøya Space in Norway at 10:12 p.m. CEST. The two-stage rocket passed through maximum aerodynamic pressure, completed main engine shutdown and stage separation, ignited its second stage, crossed the internationally recognized edge of space at 100 kilometers, and deployed five CubeSats along with one experiment, payloads selected through a German Space Agency competition funded by the European Space Agency. The company said it is still working with customers to confirm the individual status of each satellite.

CEO and co-founder Daniel Metzler called the achievement the opening of a new chapter for European spaceflight, saying Europe now has sovereign access to space independent of American or other foreign launch providers. The milestone follows a rocky start for the company. Its first launch attempt in March 2025 ended after roughly 30 seconds when the vehicle lost attitude control and crashed into the sea, an issue the company later traced to an unintended valve opening.

Isar Aerospace has since closed a 270 million euro funding round and signed a roughly 200 million euro contract with the European Space Agency under the European Launcher Challenge program. The company says defense customers now make up about 60 percent of its orders, and it is building a factory near Munich capable of producing up to 40 rockets a year, with its launch manifest already booked through 2028.

A 2025 study using observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) found an unexpected imbalance in the apparent rotation directions of spiral galaxies in the JADES deep field.



🔭 Researchers identified 263 galaxies whose spiral structure was clear enough to determine their apparent spin direction. Of these, 158 appeared to rotate clockwise and 105 counterclockwise—an imbalance of about 50% between the two groups.



🧭 If galaxy spin directions were perfectly random in this sample, roughly equal numbers would be expected. The study calculated that an imbalance this large would occur by chance with a probability of about 0.0007, or roughly 3.39 sigma under its statistical assumptions.



⚠️ But this does not prove that the universe itself is rotating or that it has a preferred cosmic axis. The study’s author discusses multiple possible explanations, including physical processes affecting galaxy formation and an observational effect associated with the Milky Way’s own rotation. More observations and independent analyses are needed to determine whether the asymmetry is genuine and universal.



🕳️ The paper also discusses more speculative ideas, including whether a large-scale rotational asymmetry could relate to alternative cosmological models. However, these possibilities remain hypotheses—not evidence that our universe exists inside a black hole.

Did JWST Just Find a Clue That Our Universe Sits Inside a Black Hole?

A 2025 study using data from the James Webb Space Telescope has uncovered a strange pattern that's reignited one of cosmology's most mind-bending ideas. Kansas State University researcher Lior Shamir examined 263 distant galaxies from JWST's Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey, JADES, clear enough to determine which direction they spin.

If galaxy rotation were random, roughly half should spin clockwise and half counterclockwise. Instead, Shamir found about 158 galaxies spinning clockwise compared to 105 counterclockwise, a two-to-one style imbalance. The odds of that split happening purely by chance are extremely low, working out to a statistical significance of about 3.4 sigma, a threshold scientists take seriously as a potential real signal rather than noise.

This doesn't prove the universe has a preferred spin, and it definitely doesn't prove we're living inside a black hole. Shamir himself outlined two competing explanations. One possibility is a real physical effect: the universe could have been born with an inherent rotation, an idea that lines up with black hole cosmology, a fringe but serious theory proposing that entire universes can form inside rotating black holes, essentially as a new universe on the other side of the collapse. The second, more mundane possibility is an observational effect, since the Milky Way's own rotation could make galaxies spinning opposite to us appear brighter and get overrepresented in the data.

Shamir has been careful to note that if this turns out to be an observational effect, it would still be scientifically important, potentially requiring astronomers to recalibrate how they measure distances in the deep universe, which could help resolve other unrelated puzzles in cosmology.

For now, the finding remains an intriguing anomaly rather than settled science. More independent studies and larger galaxy samples will be needed before anyone can say with confidence whether our universe has a genuine cosmic spin, let alone whether it originated inside a black hole.
