THE POINT. Montauk Point Lighthouse is steeped in extraordinary history. It was built under President George Washington in 1792. The famous slave ship Amistad dropped anchor here in 1839. Teddy Roosevelt camped at this beach on his way home from the Spanish-American War. It is a working lighthouse. There is a reported ghost named Abigail who drowned a hundred years ago. The lighthouse had a female keeper, Margaret Winski until 2018. During WWII, bunkers were built around it's base to watch for German U-boats & a fire tower was built nearby. Montauk Point is one of the easternmost points of land in the U.S. This lighthouse is lovingly preserved. It has already seen one pandemic. Masks and social distancing was required. No crowds even on a Saturday.

INDIAN SUMMER. October out at the edge of Long Island , New York is warmer than you might think. Days are a balmy seventy- two degrees fahrenheit [22 degrees celsius] air is getting crisp at night & leaves are turning but the ocean is sixty-eight degrees, the pool is seventy-five. DISTANCED. Six feet apart until 2022 by some estimates. I miss hugging & huddling with my friends, both here in New York and in L.A. I miss perfume & lipstick and dressing up. I miss whispering as well as heated conversation and loud laughter. I miss spontaneous plans and running into people you know. I miss traveling and planning trips, especially Brasil. I miss life before 3/11/20. Also no one can really examine and appreciate my fancy new maillot. by
