Story time: โSINGKAMASโ
An old man came to our dental clinic to inquire about tooth extraction. At first, he hesitated to enter. Quietly, he told our assistant he just came from work and felt โdirty,โ saying he was only a pedicab driver and was shy to go inside.
When the dentist overheard, she said, โPapasukin mo siya para macheck natin.โ (Let him in so we can check him.)
Inside, the man softly asked, โMay bayad po ba ang check-up?โ (Is the check-up free?)
Hearing this, the dentist gently smiled and replied, โWala po, Manong. Libre lang po ang check-up. Tara, icheck natin.โ (No, sir. The check-up is free. Come, letโs check it.)
Relief slowly filled his face, though he was still shy.
After the check-up, he asked about the extraction fee. With hope, he said, โMadamโฆ sarag kong pelag-pelagan may bayar 50 pesos kada agew?โ (Maโamโฆ can I pay 50 pesos a day?)
The dentist saw his struggleโand simply answered, โOpo, Manong.โ (Yes, sir.)
The procedure was done. Afterward, she told him, โManong, agyo la babayaran. Okay na po.โ (Sir, you donโt have to pay anymore. Itโs okay.)
The old man was speechless, tears in his eyes, endlessly saying thank you.
Days later, he returned, not to ask for anything, but to give something.
He brought singkamas as a gift.
Simple for others. But deeply meaningful for him.
And in that moment, everyone was reminded: kindness is never wasted. Dignity matters.
And sometimes, the richest people are not those with money, but those who still find a way to give from the heart.
