Honored to be one of the artists featured by 14x48 - and organization dedicated to bringing art to public spaces in NYC. This shot is from a series I did inspired by climate change and sea level rise. The images are not photoshopped. You can read my artist statement, more about this shot and about the project here: www.14x48.org.

"March 2, 2017 NEW YORK, NY—14x48 is pleased to announce its latest billboard, 'Bliss' by
Brooklyn-based artist CONOR DOHERTY. The billboard, located at E. Fordham Rd and Decatur
Ave in the Bronx, features a photograph of balloons seemingly inundated by the sea. The image
prompts viewers to engage with the realities of sea level rise from climate change, and our
general apathy towards and willful ignorance of the issue.

The balloons, improbably resilient despite the sea’s advance, suggest a time and place gone by,
swallowed by a phenomenon much larger than the event the balloons might have been used to
celebrate. As improbable as the scene is, the photograph is a real depiction of a real place, not
a digitally engineered scene. Its contradictions and paradoxes reflect our own often irrational
reactions to climate change, and our ability to process and understand yet largely ignore
complex realities. The temporal quality of the crashing wave, combined with the photographic
medium capturing an otherwise ephemeral moment, convey the issue’s urgency, despite
general inaction."

Another image from my series "The Year 2018"
This one based on 18th century drawings of slave ship cargo holds.

We are only days into this new presidency and already so much progress has been undone. So many lies told and camouflaged as “alternate facts.” If this much change can transpire in 10 days, can any of us imagine what things will look like a year from now?

Each of the images in this series (I’ll post new ones now and then) allude to familiar iconic images from the past – photographs and illustrations – that are emblematic of systemic discrimination based on race and/or religion.

I shot this today at JFK Airport. This image is one of many I have put together for a series called “The Year 2018.” We are only days into this new presidency and already so much progress has been undone. So many lies told and camouflaged as “alternate facts.” If this much change can transpire in 10 days, can any of us imagine what things will look like a year from now?

Each of the images in this series (I’ll post more tomorrow) allude to familiar iconic images from the past – photographs and illustrations – that are emblematic of systemic discrimination based on race and/or religion.

For this one I printed up the signs and mounted them. Bringing them in my Cary-on, I temporarily stuck them up above water fountains and faucets in JFK airport bathrooms. Photographed in medium format film and digital. This one is digital.

I was out of town for a few days on a job and within an hour of getting back to Brooklyn I came across this scene of Officer Shazad of the . It only lasted a few moments and I'm glad I caught it. I've built a career around understanding and appreciating how imagery can affect people.... how still and moving images can influence our behavior, our thought process, our emotions and decision making. The dark and negative imagery that has been so prevalent in our news and social media has been extremely important for jump starting a national dialogue and for creating a much-needed sense of urgency for fixing a problem that is very real. However, I believe that viewing too much of this negative imagery without a balance of positive imagery can be toxic. I'm sharing this moment and hoping that people will spread and share it with others not because it provides an opposing view to the dark and tragic police videos we've all seen, but because it helps complete the picture. Moments like this also deserve our attention so we can be reminded of all the good that goes un-noticed every day and so that we can more fully appreciate the complexity of the relationship that exists between our law enforcement and our citizens.

Thank you Officer Shazad for your service and for letting me post the video!
