I travel with a backdrop that belongs to another time.
A painted illusion, once used in a studio in Tunisia at the beginning of the 20th century.

It becomes a link between places, cultures, and lives.
A silent witness moving from one story to another.

Here, in Westbeth, it meets Joan Hall.
Her presence carries years of practice from dance to collage, from movement to composition.

Her work is currently on view at the New Museum.

The journey continues.

This backdrop has traveled across countries, carrying with it the memory of early studio photography.
Painted by hand in Tunisia around 1900, it once framed unknown lives today, it continues to do so.

At Westbeth, it enters Joan’s space.
Fragments meet fragments her collage practice echoing the layered history of the image behind her.

Joan Hall, artist and former dancer, currently exhibiting at the New Museum.

One more chapter in an ongoing journey.

Itinerary Project moves with a painted backdrop from the early 1900s a hand-crafted trompe-l’œil once used in a photographic studio in Tunisia.
I carry it from place to place, from one life to another, as a thread between stories.

In Joan’s home, the backdrop settles for a moment.
A dancer’s past lingers in her posture even in stillness, there is movement.

Today, her work is part of a group exhibition at the New Museum, marking its reopening.

A portrait between times.

Tom with his daugther
When I see Tom walking through the corridors of Westbeth, I sometimes feel I am seeing the child he once was.

There is something in his presence a quiet inward world that seems to have preserved the imagination of childhood.

Perhaps that is why his studio feels less like a workspace and more like a place where imagination has been patiently protected for decades.

For this portrait, I brought the 1900 painted backdrop from the Itinerary project into his apartment.

Two temporalities meeting:
a traveling studio from another century
inside a universe built over a lifetime.

An artist photographing another artist.

Tom Duncan has spent decades collecting what the city leaves behind.

Discarded toys. Figurines. Mechanical fragments. Forgotten objects found in junk shops and on the streets of New York.

In his hands, these fragments become intricate sculptural worlds elaborate cabinets filled with scenes that move between memory, imagination, and autobiography.

The process is meticulous. Some of his sculptures have taken more than twenty-five years to complete.

Walking into his Westbeth studio feels like entering a personal theater of memory where fragments of the past, both real and imagined, come together to form an extraordinary universe.

Itinerary is an itinerant photographic project developed across different geographies and communities.

Conceived as a mobile studio, the project travels with an old painted backdrop a remnant of early studio photography creating a space deliberately out of time and place.

In this new chapter, Itinerary unfolds inside Westbeth, the historic artists’ residence in the West Village. The studio now moves through the building itself, from apartment to apartment, from studio to studio, meeting the artists who live and work here.

Each encounter becomes a portrait shaped by presence, attention, and shared time.

Tom Duncan is one of those encounters.

Born in 1939 in Shotts, Scotland a mining village between Glasgow and Edinburgh Duncan began sculpting at the age of four after receiving a clay set from his aunt. After emigrating to the Bronx in 1947, he later studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design in New York, before working at the Port Authority building architectural models, including early iterations of the World Trade Center.

Today, his studio at Westbeth feels like an entire universe built from memory.

Love is not an age.
It is time shared.
It is choosing each other again and again.

In a world moving too fast,
growing old together might be the boldest act of love.

Love remains our most powerful human intelligence.

Happy Valentine’s Day 🤍

Love does not ask permission.
It simply exists.

Beyond labels.
Beyond fear.
Beyond categories.

To love is to be fully human.

Today we celebrate every form of love.

Love is energy.
It is fire.
It is discovering yourself through someone else.

Passion is not naive.
It is alive.

In a fractured world,
love is still the most authentic rebellion.

Happy Valentine’s Day 🤍

The backdrop remains the same.

What changes is how each person inhabits it.

Her presence brings playfulness, color, and transformation as if objects, fabrics, and even time itself were made alive again.

This is at the heart of Itinerary: not performance, but presence.

Itinerary — Westbeth is an ongoing chapter.
