The Oculus, World Trade Center, NYC. The crowd reveals the scale of the structure, but in spite of its size, the curves and brightness convey a light and airy quality. These qualities are emphasized by softening focus on a large part of the frame. Defocusing also shifts attention from the details to the overall form.

🗽 NYC skyline from Jersey City on black and white 4x5 large format film When I took this photo, I had no idea how it would turn out. The skyline looked great in person — lots of pretty colored lights that obviously wouldn’t show up on black and white film. But the photo turned out amazing, capturing the essence of NYC: bright against dark skies and waters, the city that never sleeps.
