What we have here is this bald face hornet who I was luckily enough to be able to capture this lovely shot of him. These little guys are too fast and always on the move but for a moment he sat still.

A fun fact about them - Not true hornets: They belong to the yellowjacket family and are actually large aerial yellowjackets.

What we have here is this amazing American black duck that I had spotted at the park. He was just sitting on the rock preening himself up there.

A small fun fact about these guys is that - Dark Disguise: Despite their name, they are not actually black. Their bodies are covered in dark, dusky-brown feathers, making them look completely black from a distance.

Also - Changing Beaks: A maleā€™s bill is solid yellowish, while a femaleā€™s is duller olive-green. The exact coloring and patterns of their bills and feet change as they age.

What we have here is this common whitetail dragonfly this big guy kept following me at New York Botanical Garden I felt like he was watching me for some reason.

As I did some research I found- Extreme Territoriality: Males aggressively patrol and defend specific perimeters around bodies of water, often seen chasing off rival males who intrude on their turf.

Well, sir I wasnā€™t trying to disturb your out territory lol.

Oh another fun fact - Sun-Basking Behavior: Instead of resting high up in trees, these dragonflies frequently perch on the ground, rocks, and logs in the open, making them easy to spot on sunny, localized trails and pathways.

What we have here is the willow flycatcher that I spotted at the park just hanging around on the barbed wire fence.

A small fun fact about this bird - Born with a Tune: Unlike most songbirds that must learn their vocalizations from their parents, Willow Flycatchers are born knowing how to sing their speciesā€™ distinct song.

Just a heads up that the Garden will be closed this Sunday, July 26 for a private event. šŸ‘‹

All-Garden Pass and Grounds Access Pass tickets will not be available on-site or online, and walk-up ticketing will not be offered for Members or the general publicā€”but registered children's programs will continue as scheduled. What we have is this beautiful stunning spicebush swallowtail when I had spotted this guy at the native plant garden at the New York Botanical Garden I was taken away by the pure beauty.

It kind of reminds me of the New York Knicks šŸ€ lol I love it.

A small fun fact - Snake & Bird Mimicry: Early-stage caterpillars look like shiny bird droppings. Once mature, they turn bright lime-green with giant, cartoonish eyespots to mimic a harmless green snake.

Another fun fact - Camouflaged Chrysalis: Their chrysalises change colors based on the season. They are green in the spring and summer to blend with leaves, and turn brown in the fall/winter to match dead branches.

What we have here is this adorable baby red-bellied woodpecker begging dad to feed him. He looks so cute I had to capture his photos.

A small fun fact -Fledglings: After leaving the nest, they can look surprisingly similar in size to their parents but are distinct because they lack the bright red markings on their heads. Parents continue to feed and care for these young birds for up to 6 weeks or more after they fledge.

Donā€™t judge him missing his red in his head.
