Meet the newest addition to my food forest: walking onions!
I get so excited when new plants take root in the yard! I’m always looking for plants that are perennial, edible, and low-maintenance. Walking onions check all the boxes.
They come back year after year, provide edible greens, bulbs, and little onion bulbils (great word!), and they basically plant themselves. Walking onions spread naturally when clusters of small top-sets (bulbils) grow heavy, causing the tall stalks to bend or "walk" over and root into the ground. They’re exactly the kind of sustainable, permaculture plant I want growing here. Once they establish, I shouldn't have to buy onions anymore. 🌱
