The merciless sun beat down on Marcus’s back as he trudged through the endless sand dunes. Sweat poured from his brow, stinging his eyes. He blinked it away, his gaze scanning the horizon through his scope for any sign of movement.
Just a few days ago, he was lying in wait on a rooftop in a dusty village, breath slow and steady as he tracked his target - a high-ranking insurgent leader. When the man came into view, Marcus didn’t hesitate. One squeeze of the trigger and it was over. A clean hit from over a mile away.
But that was just another day at the office for Marcus. He was one of the most skilled snipers in the division, with dozens of confirms to his name over his multiple tours. Yet with each life he took through the crosshairs, a little piece of his soul seemed to chip away.
Out here in this desolate environment, with nothing but the howling wind and the weight of his pack, Marcus’s mind inevitably wandered to his life back home. He imagined his beautiful wife Anna cradling their newborn daughter, the child he had only briefly met before being deployed. What milestones had he already missed? Her first smile, her first words? A pang of guilt sliced through him.
Marcus pushed on, the blisters on his feet screaming in protest. He remembered how it felt to pull the trigger, the way the rifle would kick back against his shoulder. He saw every face that had ever appeared through his scope. At night they haunted his dreams, their eyes accusing.
Up ahead, shimmering in the distance, he spotted a small oasis that marked their extraction point. Just a little further and this seemingly endless march would be over. He thought of Anna’s warm embrace, the sweet scent of her hair as he pulled her close. That’s what he was fighting for - to make the world safer for her and their child.
With renewed determination, Marcus quickened his pace, putting one foot in front of the other through the burning sand. He was a hunter, a silent guardian perched in the shadows. And this time, he was the hunted, being pursued by the ghosts of those who could never forgive him. But he would carry that burden to keep his loved ones safe and secure.
This was his solemn vow.
