As a former Division III two sport athlete I’m compelled to debunk the notion that going this road somehow diminishes the level of talent, competitiveness and a winning spirit that leads to national championships that’s so prominent in D1 & D2 sports. That could not be farther from the truth!!
Here’s a handful of reasons why Division III could be ideal for you:

1️⃣ D3 is the largest division in college sports. There are over 450 programs nationwide. There’s more talent then openings at a lot of D1 schools, so if you don’t get an offer at that level D3 is a viable option.

2️⃣ You get a more balanced collegiate experience. If you play more than one sport and want to continue down this path then D3 will accommodate that. If you’re interested in studying abroad or taking part in internship opportunities and other extracurricular activities, D3 affords you this option.
3️⃣ There’s a lot of money available. While D3 doesn’t offer athletic scholarships, there’s a ton of financial aid for student athletes that’s academic & leadership in nature and a variety of other scholarships and grants available. Coaches influence this process. If a D3 coach wants you bad enough they’ll advocate to get you the best merit-based financial aid package they can. You ask any coach that’s worked in all three divisions and the majority will tell you that they’ve been able to put better packages together at the D3 level than D1.
***BONUS ~ if for some reason you get injured and can’t compete (short term or long term) your scholarships aren’t in jeopardy since they’ll be merit-based. Your academic standing is the only factor, not your ability to play sports.
4️⃣ You can still make a name for yourself. D1/D2 level athletes that choose to play D3 often get lots of playing time, are often in leadership roles and have a greater opportunity to continue to develop and perhaps get recruited by a D1 school for their upper class years. You can also make money since NIL deals are open to D3 athletes.
So as you’re going through the recruiting process keep an open mind and be proactive.
