I remember when it was just a girl and a boy who fell in love.
Before the babies.
Before the house changed.
Before the noise and the schedules and the little feet running through the halls.
Before everyone called her Mama…
she was mine.
For almost fifteen years, I’ve had the best seat in the house.
I’ve watched babies become children.
I’ve watched personalities change, dreams change, plans change.
I’ve been there for the laughter that filled entire rooms and the tears nobody else saw. I’ve laid quietly nearby through the hard days. I’ve watched the chaos, the celebrations, the exhaustion, the ordinary mornings..
I never needed to understand any of it.
I just needed to be close.
That’s the thing about us dogs…
We see it all.
Every version of you.
And I remember her before motherhood.
Before little voices called for her all day long. Before her arms were always carrying babies and groceries and laundry and a thousand invisible things.
And if my old eyes could tell her anything now, it would be this:
I saw you.
I saw the girl you were.
I saw the woman you became.
Now my body is tired. My steps aren’t what they used to be, and somehow I know our time together is becoming more precious.
But please don’t only remember the ending.
Remember the house I followed you through. The floors I slept on. The babies I watched you bring home. The tears I sat beside. The ordinary days when you didn’t realize we were making memories.
Someday my spot may be empty.
You won’t hear my paws coming down the hallway.
And maybe another dog will be loved here someday.
But there will never be another me.
Because I was there at the beginning.
I knew you when you were just a girl in love with a boy, dreaming about the life ahead of you.
And somehow, I got lucky enough to stay long enough to watch you build it.
You always called me your first baby.
But you were my whole life.
And if fifteen years is all I get with you…
what a beautiful life it has been. 🤎
Love Bowen , your good boy.
