Last night’s storms were extraordinary, the amount of lightening was almost psychedelic at times. This planet is such a wild and beautiful place to live. For me it’s impossible to watch something like this and not feel a connection to something bigger. 🙏

When I was a very young boy my mother and grandfather both taught me to revere and respect the power of thunderstorms. They absolutely loved them! Last night was like a two hour long special effect from a movie….but better:) Mother Nature is truly awesome. 🙏

I want to send a reminder out to everyone as I do on most holidays. Most of us who use the waterways of South Florida do so as guests, for fun and recreation. The real locals have lived here for millions of years and the ocean is their home. Many of them come to the surface to breathe or feed . It’s up to us to respect and protect them! Without the biodiversity of the ocean our society would crumble. Please slow down and keep an eye out for all these beautiful beings! A chance encounter could just make your day ! 🙏

Happy to see my friends at Inwater Research Group yesterday! This 30x40 canvas will be auctioned off on september 19th at “Pints for Turtles” at the house of brews in Jensen Beach. All proceeds will go to conservation efforts. The inwater research team does such amazing conservation work with sea turtles through data collection, education, nest monitoring and helping any marine life they encounter, they truly go above and beyond to help! They are my favorite people to work with, and have let me join them on many research missions and other endeavors over the years, and have always supported and shared my work.

The temps have been abnormally warm in Fl since I’ve been back with several days breaking records in different parts of the state, but there is a subtle shift starting to happen this past week. The lack of rain and hurricanes due to a strengthening El Niño has kept the water blue for now, but a strong El Niño will most likely bring a lot of wind and rain this winter, so get out there while you can. Grateful for mornings like this, sunrises in the ocean with my turtle friends never get old!

I have these two pieces in stock! I printed these for my show in Colorado this summer and they did not sell. I was bummed not to sell them, they are amazing pieces. To be honest my work was too “cheap” for the Aspen peeps. The crowd was buying pieces that were 10k and up! All the sculpture and 3D artists with very high prices did well at the show, I could have tripled my prices and probably made some money, but I don’t operate like that;)

I captured these shots at Great Dunes national park in 2023 and they are amazing in person. The dunes shot is such a cool abstract piece, and the moon shot has sold well over the years, it’s a unique image that I tried for years to get and finally captured on this trip. The dimensions are 30x60 printed on gloss metal and priced at 1,700. I’m offering them at a 30% discount or even more if you take both of them! I have two new turtle shots that I really want to print for my first art show of the season here in Florida, but need to move these to make space :)

I had a unique interaction with this large spotted eagle-ray yesterday! This guy was close to 7ft across and probably weighed more than I do. He/she was feeding on the dock Pylons (see my reel to watch it feed). Everything was calm and relaxed when we saw a guy swim by with a speargun. A few minutes later I was coming up from a dive and heard the sound of the speargun behind me , this spooked the ray and he turned and came right at me full speed. He shot just over my head brushing my right shoulder with his belly(so soft ) ! It all happened in the blink of an eye. I’m happy I had my hand on the shutter button. Despite the unfortunate freak accident that happened with Steve Erin stingrays are generally harmless(unless you step on one) and usually avoid humans. I was surprised that he came at me (anytime something bigger than you comes at you in the ocean it’s kind of primal to have a bit of fear ) but I was not afraid for my life in anyway. In the last photo you can see the quadruple set of barbs that passed less than a foot from my face. Eagle-rays are listed as endangered by the ICN and are protected in Florida waters. Populations have dropped by as much as 70 percent the past few decades. They have a long reproductive rate and only have 1 to 5 pups at a time. Driftnets used in commercial fishing pose a huge threat and some countries in South America continue to eat them regularly. They are such magnificent creatures that deserve respect and protection!
