ON BEING PRESENT — We spend so much time anticipating these milestones—worrying about how they’ll look, how they’ll pan out, or how we’ll hold onto them. But the real beauty of a wedding day isn’t found in how perfectly it’s documented. It’s found in the quiet decision to just let the day wash over you.
Mary Frances and Jamie’s wedding was a beautiful testament to this. There was a gentle softening to the entire day.
During dinner, I was quietly watching everyone settle in at their tables. It’s always one of my favorite parts of a wedding—this relaxed, familial transition. Just a group of close friends gathering around a table, much like they have a hundred times before.
I pointed my camera toward the head table just as Jamie sat down, and he caught my eye. Almost instantly, his eyes welled with tears. I don’t know exactly what was passing through his mind in that split second, but I’m certain he was hit by the weight of that beautifully mundane moment. Sitting there, looking out at a room filled with the people who love them most. He just allowed himself to be overcome by it.
If I could wish anything for the couples I photograph, it’s the permission to do exactly that. To let the armor down and let the emotions bubble all the way to the surface, unedited and unfiltered. There is so much beauty in simply letting yourself be overwhelmed by how good it is. 🤍
