π GEO-FENCING & NO-FLY ZONES: BUILD SAFETY INTO THE MISSION
Flying a drone safely isn't just about controlling the aircraft. It's about controlling the environment in which the aircraft operates.
This video demonstrates how we use GEO-fencing and designated No-Fly Zones as additional layers of operational safety when planning and executing drone missions.
π‘οΈ What Is GEO-Fencing?
GEO-fencing creates a virtual boundary around an area where we want to restrict or control the drone's movement.
Think of it as an additional digital safety barrier.
Depending on the aircraft and system being used, GEO-fencing can help prevent the aircraft from entering designated areas or provide warnings when approaching a defined boundary.
For example, we may establish boundaries around:
βοΈ Airports and active flight areas
π§ Active construction zones
π’ Buildings or sensitive infrastructure
π₯ Areas where people are present
π Roads and traffic areas
β‘ Utilities and other hazards
π Adjacent operational areas
But here's an important distinction:
GEO-fencing is a safety tool β it is NOT a substitute for understanding the actual airspace restrictions.
The FAA makes clear that pilots remain responsible for knowing where they can legally operate.
π« What About a "NO-FLY ZONE"?
A No-Fly Zone within our mission planning can be used to identify an area that our aircraft should not enter as part of the specific operation.
This could be established around a hazard, a work area, personnel, equipment, or another portion of the site that we have intentionally excluded from the flight plan.
It's important to distinguish this operational safety boundary from an FAA "No Drone Zone." The FAA uses that term for specific restrictions, including certain restricted airspace, local takeoff/landing restrictions, and some TFR-related restrictions.
A software-created boundary does not give us permission to fly everywhere else.
Airspace authorization, NOTAM/TFR review, applicable regulations, site permissions, and the actual operating environment still have to be evaluated.

The FAA requires Part 107 operators to avoid manned aircraft and operate in a manner that does not create unsafe hazards. Controlled airspace operations also require appropriate authorization.
