Aucilla Rapids | North Florida

Spent the morning exploring the Aucilla River with the camera. The overcast conditions were almost perfect for photographing the rapids — soft light through the canopy, wet rocks, deep greens, and plenty of moving water.

I’ve been wanting to spend more time photographing the woods and waterways around North Florida, and mornings like this are exactly why.

The Perseids 🌠

This was easily one of the shoots I had been looking forward to the most.

I headed out to the marshes of Florida’s Big Bend with my camera, tripod, and a plan to spend most of the night under the stars. I had scouted this lone palm ahead of time and knew I wanted to use it as the foreground, with the Milky Way rising behind it and hopefully a few Perseid meteors making their way through the frame.

Once everything was set, the camera went to work—10-second exposures, one after another, for hours. Then it was mostly just sitting in the darkness, watching the sky and hoping everything came together.

And it did.

Seeing the Milky Way stretched over the marsh was incredible on its own, but watching meteors streak across the sky made the long night, mosquitoes, humidity, and lack of sleep completely worth it.

The final image is a stack of multiple exposures to bring out the detail in the Milky Way while preserving some of the meteors captured throughout the night.

Astrophotography has definitely been one of the more challenging things I’ve tried since picking up a camera, but nights like this are exactly why I wanted to learn photography in the first place.

Still learning. Still experimenting. And already looking forward to the next night under the stars. 📷🌌
