But you can’t see her eyes!
Yeah, I know. I did that on purpose.
Placing the light in such a way that the shadow was cast over her eyes adds mystery and pushes your focus to her smile.

The funny thing about time is that there is so much and so little of it. It’s absolutely infinite, yet we are only given a tiny thread of it and none of us know how long that thread is. But what we do with our little thread can have an impact on everything after.
Anyway…enjoy this little slice of generational history.

Woman on the right: “This is from hence I’ve come..my heritage.
Woman in the middle: “I’ve taken the best of what I have received and passed it on as best I could.”
Woman on the left: “This is my legacy; proof that I have been, and have made a difference in the world.”
I wanted to shoot a “generational portrait” for a while now. I was hoping to get it in the bag before Mother’s Day, but May works. I seldom shoot with soft light, but even when I do, I tend toward low key images with big shadows.

The last frame of the session. I set this session up to shoot with soft light because nearly everything I’ve created in the last few months was done with hard light sources and super high contrast.
I put this girl in 6 inches away from a 6ft wide light source and I still managed to get super low key (albeit soft) light and heavy shadows. I certainly do have a clearly defined style 🤣

My son gave me carte blanche for his senior prom portraits. I took it as an opportunity knock the dust off of my dormant desire to be world famous fashion editorial photographer with 5% of the talent of Annie Leibovitz, and 4% of her production budget, and 0% of her staff.

Pat Kline, proprietor of Cedar Swamp Sporting Goods sat down with me today. Pat is a Vietnam Veteran and river rat. He ran patrol boats in some of the nastiest waterways where a man could meet his end. I had a preconceived idea for a photograph with Pat, and I did shoot that idea, but what became THE photo of the session came about when Pat told me that in his spare time, he mends old and torn US flags. If that doesn’t fall into the category of “taking care of this is taking care of me,” I don’t know what does. I could prattle on all night, but I’ll just go ahead and get to the photo…
Thank you for your service, Pat, and welcome home.

My photo from the Ga***rd Area Council for the Arts juried photography exhibit needed a new wall to hang upon after the exhibition closed. I’ve loaned it to the Emmet County Veteran Services. That seems to be an appropriate home for it.

Wanted: a Vietnam Veteran willing to sit for a poignant portrait that will tell the story the young warrior that remains within an old man…while also reminding the world that the cause of the POW/MIA is very much a present day issue.
This is part of my ongoing portrait project featuring combat veterans. This is not always an easy thing to do. But, it is often cathartic, and important to remind our countrymen that wars do not end when the rifles fall silent.
