I wanted to share Halema'uma'u Crater Glow, a view of Kilauea's crater glowing beneath a starry sky with Orion making a quiet appearance. The bright core shifts into deep orange and red against the dark land, while wisps of smoke and volcanic fog curl through the night and add an edge of motion. I made this image just weeks before the major eruption, and the small imperfections in the stars came from the frequent, barely perceptible earthquakes at the time, which gives the scene a kind of immediacy.
