The Mustangs battle BYU in the first round of the College Rugby Association of America playoffs — a rematch of a matchup this past November. And now, 800 miles away in Provo, Utah.

Kickoff is 12 p.m. Pacific Time.

“Our backs are against the wall,” head coach Chris O'Brien said. “It’s always fun to be the little guy trying to beat the big guys.”

The Mustangs fell to BYU in the first round of the College Rugby Association of America playoffs, ending an incredible run in the program's inaugural Division I season. They officially closed 15s season right back where it all started: with a win over the Claremont Foxes.

“I’d like to thank the athletes, parents and supporters for their encouragement and assistance in running the show," interim head coach Paul Cappellano said. "While Zach [Markow] and Natalie brought little Liam into the world."

The Mustangs defeated the University of San Diego 66-35 in San Luis Obispo on St. Patrick’s Day, scoring 10 tries en route to a blowout victory over one of D1A’s fastest-rising programs — and now welcome the UCLA Bruins to the Central Coast.

“I’ve watched different games, and they can be dangerous at any time,” head coach Chris O’Brien said. “We’re hoping to peak at the right time.”

Mustangs head coach Chris O'Brien thought they played well against one of the nation's top programs. Now, they travel south to take on rival Santa Barbara.

“I always tell the guys: I don’t care who the opponent is,” he said. “We want to work on what you know. I want to work on us tomorrow.”
