Joyce E. Wasser

Joyce E. Wasser My work is about seeing the beauty in the everyday and the forgotten. Art isn’t just about grand subjects. It’s about meaning in the quiet corners of the world.

With attention to detail and atmosphere I try to balance melancholy and hope.

Another view, from the Smithfield Bridge, of the blowing engine at Station Square. A steel mill blowing engine is a massive, stationary machine used to pump high volumes of pressurised air into blast furnaces. Because it takes roughly 200,000 cubic feet of air to produce a single ton of iron, these critical "blower houses" are the lifeblood of iron and steel production.

This is the blast in a blast furnace: the machine that provided the air that rushed into the furnace to keep the chemical reactions going. This one was not used in Pittsburgh. It was brought down from Sharpsville, a little steel town in Mercer County, near where I grew up. However it was built by the Mesta Machine Company in West Homestead. Now it lives at Station Square, right in front of the Glasshouse apartments, near the Three Rivers Heritage Trail.

This photograph captures a foggy street scene, a single car parked by the side of the road and a lone pedestrian crossing the street in the mist. Bare trees with intricate branch patterns loom tall on the right, their silhouettes are softened by the dense fog. Telephone poles and power lines crisscross the image vertically and horizontally, creating a network of lines that guide the eye across the composition. Traffic lights hang dimly in the fog, their shapes barely discernible, adding to the sense of obscurity and stillness. The muted monochromatic tones and the enveloping fog create an atmosphere of quiet solitude, inviting you to feel the calmness and mystery of an early morning moment suspended between clarity and obscurity.

Bold red color and nostalgia collide in this snapshot of an old YMCA sign. The red on the sign instantly caught my eye, vibrant red against the white. It's like a memory relived. I love how this old signage becomes part of a city’s story. Do you have a favourite vintage sign in your town? Share it with me in the comments below!

I haven't been to the Pittsburgh Marathon, since we moved but it used to go right by our house. Here's a photo I took in 2023. I used selective colour to highlight this runner's orange headband, shorts & shoes.

"The Road to OZ" captures a striking juxtaposition between natural elements and the city. In the foreground, a gravel pathway winds through a lush area brimming with varied wildflowers and dense green foliage. Bright yellow and white flowers punctuate the scene, adding bursts of color and vibrancy to the earth-toned gravel and greenery. The background reveals the distant city skyline of downtown Pittsburgh with tall buildings under a sky dotted with fluffy clouds, suggesting a serene but dynamic interaction between the built environment and nature.

The focus on this contrast effectively evokes a sense of calm amid urban growth, highlighting the enduring presence of nature. The composition leads the eye naturally from the details of the wildflowers and textured pathway to the broader vista of downtown, creating a layered depth that captures your interest. The muted, earthy color palette combined with the soft atmospheric light lends the photograph a timeless quality, encouraging reflection on coexistence and change.
