🌾 Wellness Wednesday: There’s More to a Wheat Berry Than You Think
That tiny wheat berry holds more than most of us realize!
Here’s a quick look at its three parts:
🌾 Bran: The outer layer, which provides fiber and other nutrients.
🌱 Germ: The part that can sprout into a new wheat plant. It contains natural fats, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.
🌾 Endosperm: The largest part of the kernel, made mostly of starch and containing protein.
When whole wheat berries are milled into whole-grain flour, all three parts remain.
When flour is refined, much of the bran and germ is removed. Some nutrients are added back to enriched flour, but that doesn’t restore all the original fiber and other components.
This is why I love starting with the whole berry. We’re not adding something extra to the grain. We’re keeping the parts that were already there.
A little reminder that sometimes the simplest ingredients have a lot to offer.
Did you know a wheat berry had three distinct parts? 🌾
