This magical scene was taken on the Salt River in Arizona in October. I was mesmerizes by a small band of four gray horses who came down to the river away from the others. They kept their distance and never mingles with the other bands further up river.

As they began to separate and feed on the eelgrass, I was able to capture this image. The angle and the light was perfect for the reflection.

The Protector

Wild horses are woven into the fabric of America. Reintroduced by the Spanish in the 1500s, with the keyword here being "reintroduced", as their ancestors originated here long before domestication. These animals reshaped Indigenous cultures, expanded trade routes, and became inseparable from the frontier era. They carried explorers, ranchers, Native nations, and settlers across vast distances. The mustang is not just an animal of the West — it is an icon of American movement, resilience, and independence (they even had a car named after them for this reason). Why is our government so intent on getting rid of them?

Moondrinker is an icon of the Onaqui Mountains. He is a strong protector of his family band, always alert among the ever changing dynamics of the range.

These wild ones are traveling across the pond! Happy to have sold a 16x20 print of this beautiful photo from the Salt River in Arizona, to a buyer from London yesterday.

Valentino

Everyone who visits the Onaqui loves Valentino. And what's not to love? To me, this stallion epitomizes all that is "mustang".

He is of course beautiful, with a powerful, athletic build. But, he has a presence about him that you can't help but notice if you watch him for long. Horse people talk about horses that have a "good mind", well this guy has one. Fearless, but not aggressive. Thoughtful, and deliberate, and as a band stallion, he was protective yet not smothering of his family.

On my last visit to Utah, I heard that he had lost his band. Temporarily, I hope. When I saw him on this moody morning, as the herd was coming down off the mountain, he was alone, but not far from the others. He looked as majestic as always. I hope that the next time I see him he is reunited with his band, or has found another one to lead and protect.

Curious Curly

As I sat this morning watching the sky come to life in Arizona, enjoying my coffee and editing a few photos, I came across this one from Salt Wells Creek back in October. It's a good one for .

I remember it well. It was midday and I was sitting in the truck having a bit of lunch. Many horses were scattered on both sides of the two-track I was on and I was just enjoying the view.

This young curly stallion came walking past, and took an interest. He approached to within a few yards of the truck, cautiously but very curious. I talked to him of course, and his ears perked. I picked up my camera and took this shot from the window.

A wild b***o from the Black Mountains, near Oatman, Az. Unlike the b***os that live in or around town, the ones out in the rugged mountain terrain are wild, and very skittish around people. This guy was the apparent leader of a small band I found on a steep trail down a ravine.

They became immediately alert when I appeared above, so I just sat down and let then settle. They hung around for a bit and then decided that it was time to continue on their path. These b***os move like mountain goats along the rocky trails.

I had the joy if finding and hanging out with a few wild b***os in Nevada, a few days before my gear was stolen. Here is one of those shots.

The jack on the left appears to have blue eyes. Not the crystal blue of equines with the dilution gene, but a deep blue. Clearly different from the dark eyes of the others.

There is always something different in the wild. One of the reasons I love it so much.
